Rider vs. Troy
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — Rider and Troy will meet in a single-elimination game Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship at the Gainesville Regional. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon.
The Broncs (33-18) are coming off a 7-8 loss to host Florida on Friday. Despite the defeat, Rider showed offensive punch. Center fielder Anthony Paskell went 1 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, and shortstop Matt Leahy was 2 for 4 with a homer and an RBI.
Right-hander PJ Craig, who took the loss against the Gators, is expected to be a key figure for Rider. Craig worked seven innings Friday, allowing no hits but four earned runs with two strikeouts. The outing was an outlier in an otherwise dominant stretch. In his four previous starts, all wins, Craig logged a 1.29 ERA over 29 innings, including a seven-inning, no-hit, six-strikeout performance at Fairfield on May 23 and a nine-inning complete game against Merrimack on May 21, in which he allowed three hits and two earned runs while striking out six.
Troy (32-30) lost its regional opener 10-5 to Miami (FL) on Friday. The Trojans have split their last six games, including a series win at Southern Mississippi on May 23-24. Tate Farquhar is a player to watch for Troy. The right-hander last appeared in that Southern Mississippi series on May 24, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout in a 6-2 loss.
Rider swept a three-game series at Fairfield and took three of four from Saint Peter’s in mid-May. The Broncs also won two of three at Quinnipiac earlier in the month.
Troy’s offense showed flashes late in the regular season. The Trojans scored 13 runs against Louisiana-Monroe on May 16 and 14 runs at UAB on May 12. Troy went 4-3 in its final seven regular-season games.
The winner of Saturday’s game advances in the double-elimination regional. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament. Both teams are seeking their first NCAA super regional appearance.
