Coastal Carolina at Florida State
PREVIEW: Coastal Carolina at Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Coastal Carolina visits Florida State on Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two teams heading in opposite directions entering the final weekend of the regular season.
The Chanticleers (37-22) have lost seven of their past 10 games, including a 12-10 defeat Friday against Northern Illinois. The Seminoles (38-18) have dropped two consecutive games, most recently a 6-5 loss Friday to St. John’s.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium.
Coastal Carolina will look to its offense, led by center fielder Dean Mihos. The junior went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs in Friday’s loss, part of a recent stretch that has been uneven. Over his past 10 games, Mihos has four multi-hit outings but also five games without a hit. He is batting .318 on the season with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs.
Florida State counters with right-hander Bryson Moore, who has been the Seminoles’ most consistent starter. Moore pitched five innings Friday against St. John’s, allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts in a no-decision. In his past three starts, the junior has a 2.89 ERA with 12 strikeouts over 18 2/3 innings. He has not lost since May 16, when Miami scored two earned runs over 7 2/3 innings against him.
The Seminoles’ offense struggled Friday, managing only five runs despite 10 hits. Shortstop Gabe Fraser went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI, and center fielder Brayden Dowd was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Florida State has scored four or fewer runs in four of its past five games.
Coastal Carolina’s bullpen has been an issue. Friday, relievers allowed six runs over the final five innings. The Chanticleers have lost five of their past six one-run games.
The Chanticleers are 6-3 in their past nine road games, while the Seminoles are 7-3 at home.
Saturday’s game is the first of a two-game series. Both teams are seeking momentum ahead of conference tournaments.
