Arizona State vs. Mississippi

LINCOLN, Neb. (Interstat) — Arizona State and Mississippi battled for 14 innings Friday night at Haymarket Park, with the Rebels emerging with a 7-6 victory in a playoff thriller that extended both teams’ seasons.

The Sun Devils, the visiting team, jumped ahead early. Landon Hairston walked to lead off the game and Nu’u Contrades singled. Dean Toigo drove in Hairston with a single, and Austen Roellig added a run-scoring groundout to give Arizona State a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Mississippi answered in the bottom half when Judd Utermark homered to right center, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Rebels remained within striking distance until the Sun Devils pushed their lead to 3-1 in the third on Contrades’ solo home run to left field.

But Mississippi erupted in the bottom of the third. After a single by Trey Sirmans and a walk to Dalton Decker, Will Furniss doubled to right center to drive in two runs, tying the game at 3. Trevor Bissetta followed with a two-run homer down the right field line, giving the Rebels a 5-3 lead.

Arizona State tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single by Decker, but Mississippi reclaimed the lead in the next half-inning on an RBI single by Dalton Decker that scored Andrew Fawley, making it 6-5.

The Sun Devils responded quickly. In the top of the fifth, Toigo homered to right field to tie the game at 6. The score remained deadlocked through the next eight innings, with both teams squandering scoring opportunities and leaning on their bullpens.

The most critical sequence came in the bottom of the 14th. Mississippi’s Luke Romine walked to lead off the inning. Trevor Bissetta also walked, moving Romine to second. Hudson Federico singled to load the bases. Braden Randle then singled through the right side, driving in Romine for the walk-off victory.

Mississippi outhit Arizona State 14 to 10. Contrades led the Sun Devils with a 3-for-7 performance, including two home runs and three RBIs. Toigo also went 3 for 7 with a home run and two RBIs. Dominic Smaldino contributed two hits for Arizona State.

For Mississippi, Utermark homered and drove in two runs, and Furniss had two RBIs on a double. Bissetta also homered, and Federico had three hits. Dalton Decker finished with two hits and an RBI.

Arizona State fell to 37-20 with the loss, while Mississippi improved to 37-21.

The game was a back-and-forth affair that saw four lead changes. Arizona State scored first and held a 3-1 lead before Mississippi’s four-run third inning put the Rebels ahead. The Sun Devils tied it in the fifth, and neither team scored again until Randle’s walk-off single.

The contest featured multiple pitching changes, a replay review on a safe call at first base that was confirmed in the seventh inning, and an intentional walk to Hairston in the 11th that loaded the bases but did not lead to a run.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona State 6, Mississippi 5, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Mississippi a 55.60 percent probability to win before the game.
