COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — Lamar will look to avenge a lopsided February loss when the Cardinals visit Texas A&M on Friday evening at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

The Aggies (39-14) crushed Lamar 25-5 on Feb. 24 in the teams’ only meeting this season. The rematch arrives with both teams trending in opposite directions. Texas A&M enters on a three-game losing streak after getting shut out 7-0 by Auburn in its last outing. Lamar (34-25) has won four of five, including a 2-1 victory at McNeese State.

Lamar’s Chris Olivier has been dominant. The right-hander threw eight scoreless innings against McNeese State on May 22, allowing zero hits with one unearned run and seven strikeouts. In his previous start, he allowed one earned run over six innings against Texas-Rio Grande Valley. Olivier has surrendered one earned run or fewer in four of his last five outings.

Texas A&M’s Gavin Lyons has struggled for consistency. The right-hander allowed one earned run over four innings against Auburn in the Aggies’ last game. However, in his prior appearance, he gave up three earned runs in 1 2/3 innings against Mississippi State. Lyons has been used primarily as a reliever but could factor into a start or bulk innings Friday.

The Aggies’ offense, which scored 25 runs against Lamar in February, has cooled. Texas A&M managed only one run over its last two games against Auburn. Mississippi State, however, scored 18 runs against the Aggies on May 14, highlighting pitching vulnerability.

Lamar’s lineup showed depth in its win at McNeese State. Shortstop A.J. Taylor went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Cardinals pitchers combined for a two-hitter.

The series splits sharply in data projections. Interstat’s game simulator forecasts an 8-6 Lamar victory, while Interstat’s ELO system gives Texas A&M a 79.1 percent win probability. The Aggies enter as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-3.5.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The forecast calls for clear skies with temperatures in the low 80s.
