Washington State vs. Oregon State
EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — Washington State pitcher Nick Lewis threw a no-hitter, allowing only two unearned runs, and the Cougars defeated Oregon State 3-2 on Friday afternoon in a playoff game at PK Park.
Lewis, a right-hander, went the distance for the 31-26 Cougars, striking out one batter and walking three. He faced 33 batters and threw 114 pitches. The no-hitter was the first of the postseason for Washington State and came against a 43-14 Oregon State team that entered with the second-best record in the conference.
The Beavers scored both of their runs without a hit. In the second inning, Paul Vazquez doubled off the left-center wall for the first hit of the game, but Lewis had retired the previous seven batters and would not allow another. Jacob Galloway followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Vazquez to give Oregon State a 1-0 lead. Galloway advanced to third on a groundout but was left stranded.
Oregon State tied the game in the fifth. Brayden Krieg doubled to left-center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Inge. Jack Talt lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center, scoring Krieg and making it 2-2.
Washington State had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth without a hit. With two outs, Matt Hartman was hit by a pitch and Dustin Robinson was also hit. Hartman stole third and then scored when catcher Jacob Galloway’s throw to third sailed into left field, allowing a stolen base for Robinson as well.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the sixth. Ryan Roy walked, advanced to second on a single by Hartman and scored on a single through the left side by Matt Priest, putting Washington State ahead 3-2.
Washington State added an insurance run in the eighth on a double by Robinson, but the run was not needed. Lewis retired the side in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, striking out the final batter of the game.
Lewis’s performance was the most dominant of the afternoon. He allowed no hits but issued three walks and hit one batter. The two runs were both unearned. His previous start, a 5-1 win over Air Force on May 22, was also strong: 8 2/3 innings, seven hits, no earned runs and 11 strikeouts.
Oregon State starter Ethan Kleinschmit pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out nine. Albert Roblez followed with two scoreless innings, striking out five. Wyatt Queen took the loss, giving up one run on three hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Washington State collected five hits, with Priest going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Robinson was 1 for 4 with an RBI. Hartman was 2 for 4 and scored twice.
Oregon State had six hits but stranded seven runners. Vazquez and Galloway each doubled and drove in runs. Porter doubled in the third but was left on base. Inge doubled in the eighth but was left at third.
The Cougars advance in the playoffs with the win. Washington State had lost two of three to San Diego State the previous weekend but had beaten Air Force before that. Oregon State had won four of its last five entering the game, including an 8-6 loss to Air Force on May 15.
In their previous head-to-head matchups this season, each team won once. Oregon State defeated Washington State 18-0 in seven innings on April 6, and Washington State won 7-6 on April 7.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Oregon State 7, Washington State 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Oregon State an 83.20 percent probability to win.
