Arkansas-Little Rock vs. Eastern Illinois

MARION, Ill. (Interstat) — The Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans rallied past the Eastern Illinois Panthers 10-6 on Sunday to win the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship.

The Trojans, now 36-26, trailed 6-1 after six innings but erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to seize control. The Panthers, who fell to 33-21, had built their lead with single runs in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, capitalizing on two Trojan errors to score three unearned runs.

Arkansas-Little Rock’s comeback began against the Eastern Illinois bullpen. After a leadoff walk to Ty Rhoades, Hill doubled to put runners at second and third. Cooper Chaplain then doubled down the left-field line, driving in both Rhoades and Hill to cut the deficit to 6-3. Blake Simpson followed with a two-run single up the middle, scoring Chaplain and Smith and making it 6-5. Jakob Baumbach singled to left-center for two more runs, plating Freund and Simpson and giving the Trojans a 7-6 lead. Rhoades added a ground-rule double to left that scored Baumbach, and Hill’s sacrifice fly brought home Cano to complete the eight-run outburst.

Eastern Illinois had taken the lead in the first inning when Chris Worcester homered to deep left field, his ninth of the season. The Panthers added a run in the second on a run-scoring single by Peters, then made it 3-0 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Rossi. After Arkansas-Little Rock scratched a run in the fifth on Lopez’s RBI single, the Panthers answered in the bottom half when Mike O’Conor doubled to drive in Stanley. In the sixth, consecutive errors by the Trojans allowed two more unearned runs, with Castro singling in Rossi and Stanley laying down a sacrifice bunt that scored Peters.

The Trojans’ bullpen held firm after the seventh. Isaac Evaniew earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits while striking out one. He entered in the bottom of the seventh and retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, stranding a runner in the seventh and working around a leadoff single in the ninth. Evaniew had allowed one earned run over two innings in his previous outing against SIU Edwardsville on May 23.

Arkansas-Little Rock outhit Eastern Illinois 13-9. Simpson went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Chaplain drove in two runs despite going 1-for-5. Rhoades finished 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, and Baumbach added two RBIs on a 1-for-4 day with a walk. Worcester led the Panthers with a 2-for-5 performance that included the home run and an RBI. O’Conor was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The victory gave Arkansas-Little Rock its second win over Eastern Illinois in as many days, following a 4-3 decision Saturday in the tournament. The teams split their regular-season series in April, with the Trojans winning two of three at home. The championship game was played in the afternoon and evening at Marion, Illinois, after the previous day’s games were postponed.
