North Carolina vs. Georgia Tech

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Georgia Tech defeated North Carolina 13-6 on Sunday afternoon in the ACC Baseball Championship, breaking open a tight game with a six-run seventh inning to improve to 46-9.

The Yellow Jackets, who took a 2-1 series win over the Tar Heels in April, used a balanced attack that included 14 hits. Right fielder Alex Hernandez went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, including a three-run double in the third inning that erased an early deficit. Center fielder Drew Burress finished 3 for 4 with a two-run homer and two RBIs. Third baseman Ryan Zuckerman added a solo home run and two RBIs.

North Carolina, which fell to 45-11-1, managed eight hits. Center fielder Owen Hull homered and drove in three runs, going 2 for 4. The Tar Heels seized a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Hull’s run-scoring single, but Georgia Tech answered immediately when Zuckerman led off the second with a solo shot to right.

The game’s decisive moment came in the sixth inning, when Georgia Tech broke a 5-5 tie. With one out, Burress doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Adan Advincula, followed by an RBI single from shortstop Kyle Lackey. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 8-5 and never looked back.

In the seventh, Georgia Tech added three more runs without a hit. A walk, a hit batter and a single loaded the bases before two wild pitches and an intentional walk pushed three runs across. Hernandez capped the inning with an RBI single.

North Carolina had climbed back from a 6-1 deficit in the middle innings. After falling behind on Burress’ homer and Hernandez’s three-run double in the third, the Tar Heels scored two runs in the fourth on a two-run single by second baseman Gavin Kellis, then tied the game in the fifth on Hull’s two-run homer. The Tar Heels’ offense stalled after that, managing only one run in the seventh on a groundout that scored Hull from third.

Georgia Tech’s bullpen shut down North Carolina over the final four innings. Justin Shadek tossed two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Cooper Underwood struck out two in a hitless eighth, and Mason Patel closed with a hitless ninth, striking out one. For North Carolina, reliever Walker McDuffie pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Tom Chmielewski worked a scoreless eighth.

The game featured five wild pitches, three by North Carolina pitchers, and Georgia Tech capitalized on each opportunity. Hernandez’s double in the seventh gave him a team-high four RBIs for the game.

The win moves Georgia Tech into the tournament semifinals, where the Yellow Jackets will face the winner of the other quarterfinal.
