Creighton vs. Saint John`s

MASON, Ohio (Interstat) — Saint John’s scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a tie and defeat Creighton 5-3 Sunday evening in the Big East Baseball Championship, advancing to 33-24 while dropping the Bluejays to 31-26.

The Red Storm capitalized on a pair of Creighton errors in the pivotal seventh, turning a 3-3 deadlock into a two-run lead that held through the final two frames. Wilson Magers, who had entered in relief to start the inning, walked LeGrande, who stole second. After two groundouts, Magers intentionally walked Agresti. Cowan then singled to shortstop, and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed LeGrande to score and Agresti to advance to third. Frey followed with a single to center field, scoring Agresti with an unearned run to give Saint John’s a 5-3 lead.

Creighton had taken an early advantage on a solo home run by Rocco Gump in the top of the third, his second hit of the game. Gump finished 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs. The Bluejays added another run in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded single by Gump that scored Deters, who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.

Saint John’s answered in the bottom of the third when Cristian Bernardini homered to left field, cutting the lead to 3-1. The Red Storm tied the game in the fourth. Raifstanger led off with a single and advanced on a fielding error by the right fielder, then scored on a single by McMillan. After an error by the left fielder allowed McMillan to score the tying run, the game was knotted at 3.

Creighton starter Jack Pineau pitched four shutout innings, allowing no hits and striking out two, but was charged with two unearned runs. Anthony Unga and Brian Gould combined for two scoreless innings of relief before Magers took the loss, allowing one earned run on two hits in two innings.

Saint John’s used a committee of four pitchers. Ian Mowad started but lasted only two innings, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned. Tyler Longoria followed with two scoreless innings, striking out two. Victor Frederick earned the win with three innings of two-hit, scoreless relief, striking out two. Evan Hoeckele closed with two innings of one-hit, scoreless relief, striking out one.

Creighton outhit Saint John’s 7-6 but committed three errors that led to three unearned runs. The Bluejays left five runners on base and struck out eight times.

The win avenged a 2-4 loss to Creighton in the teams’ previous meeting on May 21, part of a four-game regular-season series that saw Saint John’s win three of four.

The teams will meet again Monday in the championship game of the Big East tournament, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
