Longwood vs. High Point

SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — Callen Travers threw six no-hit innings and the Longwood Lancers overcame an early pitching duel to defeat the High Point Panthers 7-4 on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in the Big South Baseball Championship at Shelby.

Travers struck out eight, walked two and allowed no hits over six shutout innings in his longest outing of the season. The victory improved Longwood’s record to 33-25. High Point fell to 37-20.

The game remained scoreless through four innings as both starting pitchers dominated. High Point’s Wade Walton struck out eight and allowed four hits over seven innings, but the Lancers broke through in the fifth inning after an error extended the frame.

With one out, Ben Yeatts walked and Max Lawson walked. Keels T. walked to load the bases. Pulliam B. reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, allowing Yeatts to score the game’s first run. The call was reviewed and upheld, keeping the bases loaded. Jon Howard followed with a double to right-center field, clearing the bases with a three-run double that pushed the lead to 4-0.

The Lancers added to the lead in the eighth inning against reliever Shafer. Howard walked, advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher and scored on a double by Jon B. Tyler Bruggeman then homered to left field, a two-run shot that made it 7-3.

High Point answered in the bottom of the seventh against Longwood relievers. Joe Castrichini entered for Travers and allowed a strikeout that turned into a baserunner on a passed ball. He then walked a batter before being replaced by Wyatt Bunch. A groundout advanced both runners, and Justin Ruiz doubled down the right-field line, scoring two runs. Ruiz advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kelly. Kelly stole second but was stranded when Oh struck out swinging.

The Panthers cut the deficit to 7-4 in the eighth inning against Jackson Nash. Nash pitched two no-hit innings, striking out three, but issued a walk and an error allowed an unearned run to score on a double by Carter.

High Point put two runners on in the ninth against Nash, but he struck out Oh looking and Allen flied out to center field to end the game.

Travers earned the win after a string of recent relief appearances. He had thrown 0.1 inning May 22 against Charleston Southern, 1.0 inning May 20 against South Carolina Upstate and 2.2 innings May 16 against Winthrop. He was not expected to go deep into the game but efficiently carved through the High Point lineup.

Walton took the loss despite a strong outing. He allowed four hits, four runs but none earned, walked three and struck out eight over seven innings. Dylan Story pitched 1.2 hitless innings with two strikeouts for High Point after entering in the eighth.

Offensively, Longwood collected six hits. Carter J. went 2-for-4 with a double. Bruggeman finished 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Howard drove in three runs on a 1-for-4 day.

High Point managed seven hits. Ruiz went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Kelly singled, drove in a run and stole a base. Neither team committed an error after the fifth inning miscues.

Longwood will face Winthrop later Saturday in its next game of the championship. High Point will meet South Carolina Upstate later Saturday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of High Point 7, Longwood 4, and its ELO system gave High Point a 75.10 percent probability to win.
