Northeastern edges Hofstra 5‑4 behind Aschettino’s homer

WILMINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — AJ Aschettino went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lift Northeastern to a 5-4 victory over Hofstra on Saturday at Brooks Field.

The Huskies (36-20) struck first in the bottom of the first when Matt Brinker singled in a run. Aschettino walked with the bases loaded in the third, and Mike Musacchia added a sacrifice fly. Aschettino then crushed a two-run homer in the fifth, his fifth of the season, to put Northeastern ahead 5-0.

Hofstra (22-28) answered in the sixth. A walk, a wild pitch and a subsequent wild pitch brought in two runs, and a third run scored on another wild pitch. In the ninth, Hofstra’s Max Lynn singled in a run, but the Pride could not complete the comeback.

Ryan Griffin earned the win, allowing one hit and three earned runs over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Tom Mahoney pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one earned run.

Hofstra pitchers combined for 11 innings of three-hit ball, but the Huskies’ early offense proved decisive.
