Rhode Island vs. VCU

TYSONS, Va. (Interstat) — The Atlantic 10 baseball championship features a unique matchup Saturday evening when the Rhode Island Rams face the VCU Rams — a pair of teams that share a nickname but have contrasting résumés.

Rhode Island (26-29) enters as the lower seed, having clawed to a .500 conference mark. VCU (35-23) carries a stronger overall record and is the higher seed in the tournament at Capital One Park.

Despite the difference in season records, Rhode Island has dominated the head-to-head series in 2026, winning all four meetings. The most recent came Friday, a 5-4 victory in which Rhode Island catcher Danny Leikus starred, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. That win extended the Rams’ winning streak to three games after a pair of blowout road wins over Saint Joseph’s and George Mason earlier in the week.

Leikus has been a central figure in the Rhode Island lineup. Over his last 10 games, the catcher has collected multiple hits in seven contests, including a 4-for-5 performance with two RBIs at Davidson on May 9 and a 3-for-6, one-homer, four-RBI day at Davidson on May 10. His power and consistency make him a threat in a tournament setting.

VCU counters with right-handed pitcher Cooper Campbell, who has had an up-and-down month. Campbell was tagged for four earned runs on zero hits over 5.1 innings in Friday’s loss to Rhode Island, but he had been effective earlier in May, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings against Saint Louis on May 3 and not allowing an earned run in two appearances against Davidson. The VCU bullpen has been reliable in recent weeks, with the team winning nine of its last 11 games overall.

VCU’s offense has been potent, scoring 13 runs in a win over Saint Joseph’s on Friday, and the Rams defeated Richmond 7-4 on Thursday. However, they will need to solve a Rhode Island club that has found ways to win tight games, including three one-run decisions in the season series.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-6 victory for VCU, but the actual head-to-head results suggest Rhode Island holds a psychological edge. Expect a closely contested game in which Leikus’ bat and Campbell’s ability to rebound could decide the outcome.

First pitch is scheduled for the evening, with both teams seeking to advance in the double-elimination bracket.
