San Diego State vs. Washington State

MESA, Ariz. (Interstat) — The seed San Diego State Aztecs meet the seed Washington State Cougars in an elimination game of the Mountain West Conference Baseball Championship at 7 p.m. MDT Saturday at Hohokam Stadium.

The Aztecs (34-22) enter the tournament after a 11-6 victory over New Mexico on Friday that snapped a two-game losing streak. Washington State (28-25) rode a dominant pitching performance to a 5-1 win over Air Force in its tournament opener.

San Diego State outfielder Adam Magpoc was the catalyst in Friday’s win, going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. The left fielder has been streaky over his last 10 games, with three multi-hit performances and five games without a hit. He is 11-for-39 (.282) in that span with two home runs and six RBIs.

Washington State counters with right-hander Nick Lewis, who fired 8⅔ scoreless innings against Air Force on Friday, scattering seven hits and striking out 11. The outing followed a seven-inning, two-earned run gem at Air Force on May 8 and a complete-game shutout of Fresno State on May 1. Lewis has allowed just two earned runs over 24⅔ innings in his last three starts, with 22 strikeouts.

The Aztecs won two of three meetings between the teams in San Diego from March 13-15, including a 15-10 slugfest on March 15 and a 14-4 rout on March 13. The Cougars took the middle game 7-2 on March 14.

San Diego State third baseman Tyce Peterson drove in two runs and homered in Friday’s win. Aidan Russell earned the victory with four innings of two-hit, one-run ball.

Washington State second baseman Gavin Roy went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs against Air Force.

The Aztecs dropped two of three at UNLV last weekend before righting the ship Friday. Washington State had lost three of four before Lewis’ dominant outing.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m. MDT.
