New Mexico vs. Air Force

MESA, Ariz. (Interstat) — Luke Elmore went 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead Air Force to an 11-1 victory over New Mexico on Saturday afternoon at HoHoKam Park.

Elmore’s first homer, a solo shot to deep left field in the third inning, tied the game and sparked a four-run rally that put the Falcons ahead for good. His second, a three-run blast in the fifth inning, broke the game open. He finished with his eighth homer of the season and also singled twice.

Ethan Dillinger pitched eight innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out five. He walked none and threw 95 pitches. Dillinger retired the side in order in the second, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings after a shaky start.

New Mexico scored its only run in the top of the first. After a leadoff groundout and a hit batter, Luke Mansy singled up the middle to drive in the runner from second. The Lobos managed just one more hit the rest of the game, a single by Mansy in the fourth inning.

Air Force answered in the third. With one out, Elmore homered to left. After a strikeout, the Falcons strung together four straight hits. Andrew Oster singled, Ben Niednagel singled and stole second, and Walker Zapp doubled down the left-field line to drive in two runs. Jack Hanoian followed with an RBI single to make it 4-1.

The Falcons added two more in the fourth. Elmore singled and scored on a wild pitch, and Zapp added a sacrifice fly. Then in the fifth, Air Force broke it open with a five-run outburst. Christian Taylor singled, Garrett Hutchins singled, and Elmore crushed his second homer, a three-run shot to deep left. Oster and Niednagel also reached base before the inning ended.

New Mexico starter Cooper Corkrean lasted three innings, allowing four runs on five hits with one strikeout. He was replaced by Sam Woltz, who gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings. Diego Alvarez pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Lobos, striking out two.

Air Force totaled 19 hits. Taylor went 4 for 5, and Niednagel added two hits and three stolen bases. Hutchins drove in two runs with a double in the eighth inning. Zapp had one hit and three RBIs. Tripp Garrish doubled for the Falcons.

New Mexico’s record dropped to 28-24-1 overall and 13-16 in Mountain West play. Air Force improved to 27-27 overall and 13-14 in conference. The win gave the Falcons a series victory after they split the first two games of the three-game set. Air Force had beaten New Mexico 11-1 on May 2 and 8-4 on May 3 before losing 9-7 on May 1 in Albuquerque.

The game was played at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona, a neutral site for the Mountain West series. The afternoon start time drew a modest crowd.

Mansy had both of New Mexico’s hits and the team’s only RBI. The Lobos struck out seven times and left five runners on base. Air Force’s defense committed one error, but it did not lead to a run.

The third inning proved decisive. After the Lobos took an early lead, Elmore’s homer erased the advantage and the Falcons never trailed again. The outburst in the fifth inning removed any doubt.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Air Force 5, New Mexico 4. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Air Force with a 50.70 percent probability to win.
