Oklahoma State vs. Kansas

SURPRISE, Ariz. (Interstat) — Tyson LeBlanc drove in five runs with a double and a grand slam, leading Kansas to a 9-2 victory over Oklahoma State on Friday night at Surprise Stadium.

LeBlanc, the Jayhawks’ shortstop, went 3 for 4 with his 21st home run of the season. He walked in the first inning and scored on a single by Augusto Mungarrieta, then doubled to deep center field in the second inning to bring home Osoria and give Kansas a 3-2 lead. After two quiet innings, LeBlanc delivered the decisive blow in the eighth inning, launching a grand slam to deep left field off Oklahoma State reliever Fyke that pushed the lead to 9-2.

Mason Cook earned the win for Kansas, pitching 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Toby Scheidt followed with 1 1/3 hitless innings and three strikeouts, and Riane Ritter closed with two innings, allowing one hit and one earned run with four strikeouts.

Ethan Lund started for Oklahoma State and pitched six innings, giving up no hits but three earned runs with eight strikeouts. Brennan Phillips recorded the final out of the eighth inning with a strikeout.

Kansas opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. LeBlanc walked and moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Mungarrieta’s single to right center. Jordan Bach followed with a double to left center that scored Dykhoff, tying the game 2-2.

Oklahoma State had taken an early lead in the top of the first without a hit. The Cowboys scored two runs on a groundout and two strikeouts before the Jayhawks answered.

LeBlanc’s double in the second put Kansas ahead 3-2. The score remained that way until the top of the sixth, when Oklahoma State’s Avery Ortiz doubled to deep center field, scoring Ritchie to tie the game at 3-3. But Cook retired the next batter to end the inning, and Kansas took control in the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kansas broke the tie for good. Dykhoff singled and scored on Mungarrieta’s double to left center. After Bach was hit by a pitch, Flowers singled to left center to score Mungarrieta, making it 5-3. A walk loaded the bases, and LeBlanc’s grand slam capped the rally.

Oklahoma State managed only four hits in the game. Meola singled and doubled, Ortiz singled and doubled with an RBI, and the Cowboys struck out 15 times. Kansas collected 10 hits, with Mungarrieta going 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Bach adding a double and an RBI.

The win improved Kansas to 41-16 overall. Oklahoma State fell to 37-20.

LeBlanc entered the game after a strong stretch: he went 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI in an 8-7 win over Baylor on May 21, and had homered in three of his previous four games.

The game was part of the Big 12 schedule. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Oklahoma State 8, Kansas 6, and its ELO system gave Oklahoma State a 61.60 percent probability to win. Oklahoma State had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of plus-1.5.
