Pacific vs Saint Mary`s
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Interstat) — Ian Josephson’s three-run double in the seventh inning capped a five-run outburst and lifted Saint Mary’s to a 10-7 victory over Pacific in the West Coast Conference Baseball Championship on Friday.
The Gaels (31-24) erased a one-run deficit with the decisive rally, taking control after the Tigers (24-28-1) had pushed ahead in the top of the seventh. Braeden Schnabel’s double to right-center brought home the go-ahead run for Pacific, making it 6-5, but Saint Mary’s answered immediately.
Makoa Sniffen singled home Kashimoto to tie the game at 6. After a walk to Ian Armstrong loaded the bases, Johnson walked to force in the go-ahead run. Josephson then cleared the bases with a double to right-center, scoring Sniffen, Armstrong and Johnson to push the lead to 10-6.
The Tigers trimmed the deficit to 10-7 in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to pinch hitter French, but reliever Jake Hilton struck out Spear and induced a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Schnabel finished 4 for 5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for Pacific. He homered in the fourth inning, his third of the season, to get the Tigers on the board. Connor Raridan tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out one. Garret Plata started for Pacific and went five innings, giving up five earned runs on no hits—though the line reflected a series of walks and errors—with one strikeout.
For Saint Mary’s, Josephson drove in three runs on a 1-for-3 day. Sniffen went 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Armstrong hit a solo home run in the third inning, his 14th of the season. Jake Nobles worked 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts. Talin Gardini started for the Gaels and lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrendering five earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
The game featured a back-and-forth feel after a quiet start. Saint Mary’s struck first in the bottom of the first when Griffith tripled and scored on a wild pitch. The Gaels added two more in the second on a throwing error and a Kashimoto RBI single, building a 3-0 lead. Armstrong’s solo homer in the third made it 4-0.
Pacific responded in the fourth when Schnabel led off with a solo homer to deep right field. The Tigers then erupted for four runs in the fifth. Evans doubled and scored on a Davis single. Orr’s sacrifice fly brought home Davis, and MacArthur doubled to left-center, scoring Brendan and Tandy to give Pacific a 5-4 lead.
Sniffen tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double, scoring Griffith. The score remained 5-5 until the seventh, when Schnabel’s double put Pacific ahead again, setting the stage for Saint Mary’s decisive rally.
Pacific outhit Saint Mary’s 13-12, but the Gaels capitalized on walks and a key error. The Tigers left nine runners on base.
Pacific had won its previous game against San Francisco 8-4 on Thursday, while Saint Mary’s had defeated Gonzaga 13-4 in its tournament opener.
The loss dropped Pacific to 1-4 against Saint Mary’s this season, having lost both games of a two-game series in April.
