North Alabama vs. Lipscomb

DELAND, Fla. (Interstat) — Lipscomb Bisons rallied from a two-run deficit in the seventh inning and walked off in the 14th to defeat the North Alabama Lions 4-3 Friday afternoon in an ASUN tournament game at Melching Field at Conrad Park.

The game stretched deep into the evening after both bullpens dominated for long stretches. North Alabama grabbed an early lead, but Lipscomb starter Jackson Lee quieted the Lions after a rough second inning, and the Bisons’ pitching staff combined to allow only one hit over the final 10 innings.

North Alabama struck first with a three-run second inning. Will Millard singled, Justin Santoyo singled and Bryant Loving singled to load the bases. Millard scored on a wild pitch, Santoyo scored on Jackson Westmoreland’s single through the right side, and Loving scored on Petey Craska’s sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Lipscomb answered in the bottom half. Kai Holm was hit by a pitch, and an error by second baseman Tyler LePage put two runners on. Damion Kenealy Jr. singled to load the bases, and Cole Pippenger’s sacrifice fly scored Holm to cut the lead to 3-1.

North Alabama starter Reese Young dominated after that, holding the Bisons hitless through six innings. He walked two and struck out three over 6 1/3 innings but was charged with two earned runs when Lipscomb tied the game in the seventh. Hutson Miles walked, and after a pitching change, Aaron Stelogeannis walked. Cam Pruitt then walked to load the bases. Jordan Thomas reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Miles, and Stelogeannis scored on a throwing error by shortstop Westmoreland to knot the game at 3-3.

The score remained deadlocked through the 14th as the bullpens traded zeros. Lipscomb’s Adam Jamison threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out six. Kaleb Kantola added 2 1/3 scoreless frames, and Mack Mabrey worked a perfect 14th. For North Alabama, Luke Davenport pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings with four strikeouts, Tyler Rice contributed 2 2/3 hitless innings, and Justus Agosto allowed one hit and struck out two over 2 1/3 innings.

The Bisons finally broke through in the 14th. With one out, Brock Beddingfield struck out looking. Miles then singled to center field and stole second. Stelogeannis walked, bringing Pruitt to the plate. Pruitt lined a single to right-center, scoring Miles from second for the walk-off victory.

Lee, the top star for Lipscomb, allowed one hit and three strikeouts over five scoreless innings. He entered with a win in his previous start May 15 at Central Arkansas, where he pitched four innings of two-run ball.

The Lions outhit Lipscomb 11-10 but left 13 runners on base. North Alabama fell to 30-27 overall while Lipscomb improved to 28-24.

The teams had split a three-game series in April, with Lipscomb winning two of three at North Alabama. Lipscomb also took two of three in a earlier series in Nashville.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Lipscomb 7, North Alabama 6, and the Bisons entered with a 60.40 percent win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system.
