Mountaineers edge Wildcats 4‑2 behind Yehl’s strong start
SURPRISE, Ariz. (Interstat) — West Virginia pitcher Maxx Yehl struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings, leading the Mountaineers past Kansas State 4-2 on Thursday at Surprise Stadium. The Mountaineers (38-13, Big 12) jumped ahead in the first when catcher Gavin Kelly hit his 13th home run. West Virginia added three runs in the sixth, aided by a wild pitch that scored Armani Guzman and a Brock Wills RBI single. Kelly finished 1 for 3. The Wildcats (29-26) got a two-run homer from Grant Gallagher in the seventh, his fifth of the season, but Ian Korn closed with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief, striking out five. Kansas State starter Lincoln Sheffield allowed four earned runs over 5 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. West Virginia outhit the Wildcats 11-4. The win avenged a three-game sweep by Kansas State earlier this month.
