South Dakota State vs. Northern Colorado
GREELEY, Colo. (Interstat) — Kaden Rylance tossed six scoreless innings of no-hit baseball and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits held on for a 2-1 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears in a Summit League game Thursday night.
Rylance, a right-hander, allowed no hits and one earned run while striking out five over six innings. He walked one and hit a batter. The performance improved South Dakota State to 19-30 overall and came after Rylance had struggled in his previous start, allowing three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings against Omaha on May 16.
Ty Madison relieved Rylance and threw three shutout innings, scattering no hits and striking out two to earn the save. The Jackrabbits’ pitching staff limited Northern Colorado to two hits, both singles, and struck out eight.
South Dakota State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Nic Werk reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double to left-center by Owen Siegert, who drove in the first run of the game.
The Jackrabbits added a second run in the fourth. Nate Wachter doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third on a single by Luke Jones. Wachter scored on a fielder’s choice bunt by Dayton Franke when Northern Colorado starter Jake Storey threw the ball away on a potential force play at third, allowing an unearned run.
Storey pitched six innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three. He was charged with the loss, dropping Northern Colorado to 17-37.
The Bears cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Sanchez was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Jaden Stone and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Logan Pruski. Stone was then caught stealing second to end the inning.
Northern Colorado had a chance to tie in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Ethan Mooser singled to second base, but Sam Pease grounded out to third to end the game.
Lucas Stone pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Bears, allowing two hits and striking out one. Brady Hudson retired the only batter he faced in the ninth, striking out Nolan Grawe with the bases loaded.
Siegert went 1 for 4 with an RBI. Wachter was 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Luke Wroblewski singled for South Dakota State.
For Northern Colorado, Pruski drove in the lone run. Jaden Stone was 1 for 3.
The game was the first of a four-game series between the two teams. The Jackrabbits and Bears had split a three-game series in Brookings, South Dakota, in late April, with Northern Colorado winning 19-2 after losing 7-6 in 11 innings. South Dakota State had swept a three-game set at Northern Colorado in late March, winning 21-2, 21-10 and 6-9.
Interstat’s game simulator projected South Dakota State as a 6-5 winner, and the Interstat ELO system gave the Jackrabbits a 58.70 percent probability of victory.
