Grambling vs. Bethune-Cookman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — The seed Grambling Tigers meet the seed Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in the Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball championship Thursday at Regions Field. First pitch is scheduled for the evening.

Grambling (22-29) enters the single-elimination game as a heavy underdog. The Tigers dropped their regular-season finale 10-0 to Alabama State on Wednesday, managing only three hits. Right-hander Keyon Guillory took the loss, allowing six earned runs in five innings despite scattering no hits.

Guillory, a pitcher to watch for Grambling, has struggled through a difficult May. Over his last four outings, he has surrendered 22 earned runs across 12 1/3 innings, including seven earned runs in 1 1/3 innings against Bethune-Cookman on May 14 — a 23-1 Wildcats victory. His lone bright spot came May 2 against Florida A&M, when he pitched five innings and allowed four earned runs in a 12-11 win.

Bethune-Cookman (37-19) stumbled in its final regular-season game, falling 6-4 to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday. Third baseman Andrey Martinez led the Wildcats in that loss, going 1 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Martinez has been a consistent power threat for Bethune-Cookman. In 10 games since May 1, he has homered in five of them, including multiple home runs May 9 against Alabama State. Against Grambling this season, Martinez is 4 for 10 with two home runs and four RBIs over three games.

The Wildcats swept a three-game series from Grambling on May 14-16, outscoring the Tigers 37-10. Bethune-Cookman won the opener 23-1, then dropped the middle game 7-2 before closing with a 12-1 victory.

Grambling’s offense has struggled against Bethune-Cookman pitching, scoring a combined two runs over 27 innings in the series. The Tigers have lost seven of their last nine games overall.

Bethune-Cookman, which finished second in the SWAC standings, has won five of its last seven games. The Wildcats’ balanced lineup features Martinez, who is hitting .327 with 12 home runs and 48 RBIs entering the tournament.

The winner advances in the SWAC championship bracket.
