Massachusetts-Lowell vs. Bryant

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — Nicholas Solorzano went 4 for 6 with a home run and three RBIs and the Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks held off the Bryant Bulldogs 7-5 in 11 innings Wednesday afternoon at Mirabito Stadium in an America East contest.

Solorzano’s two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning capped a four-run outburst that broke a 3-3 tie and proved decisive after Bryant scored twice in the bottom half. The River Hawks improved to 21-29, while the Bulldogs fell to 26-25.

Massachusetts-Lowell seized a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Cal Chance singled, moved to third on a single by Rowan Masse and a walk to Sean O’Leary, then scored on a groundout by Carlos Martinez. Solorzano followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to bring home Masse.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh, when O’Leary led off with a solo home run to right field, extending the lead to 3-0. River Hawks starter Alfred Mucciarone had held Bryant hitless through six innings, but the Bulldogs erupted in the bottom of the seventh. After a single by Charlie Saul and a walk to Hunter Kingsbury, Cam Papetti singled to load the bases. Jacob Gaudreau reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Saul out at home, but Carlos Irizarry then singled through the right side, driving in Papetti and Kingsbury. Casey Wensley followed with a single up the middle that scored Mike Fiatarone, who had pinch-run for Gaudreau, tying the game at 3-3.

Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings, sending the game to extra innings. After a scoreless 10th, Massachusetts-Lowell broke through in the 11th. Masse singled, O’Leary reached on a throwing error by the pitcher, and Martinez doubled to center field, scoring both runners. Solorzano then crushed a home run to right field, plating Martinez and making it 7-3.

Bryant fought back in the bottom of the 11th. Kingsbury walked, Papetti singled, and Fiatarone singled to load the bases. After a strikeout, Wensley singled to left field, scoring Papetti and Kingsbury, but the rally ended when Ellis Garcia flied out to right.

Solorzano, who entered the game with four RBIs in his previous outing against Binghamton, also doubled twice. Martinez finished 2 for 6 with three RBIs. Mucciarone pitched seven innings, allowing no hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts and left with the lead. Brian Foley earned the win after throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Jake LeFrancois recorded the final two outs for the save.

For Bryant, Aidan Vining allowed one run over five innings in relief, and Sean Zaslaw threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Casey Wensley drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.

The game was the fourth meeting between the teams this season, with Bryant having swept a three-game series at Massachusetts-Lowell in April. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Bryant with a 72.60 percent probability to win.
