IRVINE, Calif. (Interstat) — Griffin Naess struck out 11 over 7 2/3 innings and Nick Bonn earned a save with 1 1/3 scoreless frames as Cal Poly beat UC San Diego 1-0 on Thursday at Anteater Ballpark in a Big West contest.

The Mustangs (34-21) scored the game’s only run in the second inning. Jake Downing crossed the plate on a Nate Castellon single to the pitcher, with Gavin Spiridonoff advancing to third on the play.

UC San Diego starter Steele Murdock pitched eight innings, allowing one earned run on no hits while striking out 11 but took the loss. The Tritons (24-27) managed three hits against Naess and Bonn but could not score.

Cal Poly also had three hits. Ryan Tayman singled once in four at-bats, while Cam Hoiland, Casey Murray Jr., Jake Downing, and Gavin Spiridonoff combined to go 0-for-9. Gabe Camacho went 0-for-3 for UC San Diego.

Naess improved to 9-3 with the win, and Bonn recorded his third save. The game was played on the campus of UC Irvine.
