Stanford vs. Miami (FL)
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Alonzo Alvarez had four hits, including two home runs, and drove in three runs to lead Miami (Fla.) to an 11-2 victory over Stanford in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Wednesday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium.
Alvarez, the Hurricanes’ catcher, went 4-for-5 with a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the sixth. His second home run extended Miami’s lead to 9-3 and secured the win.
Starting pitcher Rob Evans earned the victory, allowing two earned runs on four hits over seven innings while striking out six. Jake Dorn worked 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out three.
Stanford scored first on a run-scoring double by Jake Moran in the second inning and took a 2-0 lead on Teddy Tokheim’s solo home run in the third. Tokheim finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Miami responded in the bottom of the second. Alvarez homered to cut the deficit to 2-1, and the Hurricanes added two more runs on a bases-loaded single by Ulises Peralta and a fielder’s choice that resulted in a run after an error by Stanford shortstop Jack Bates. The Hurricanes led 3-2.
After Tokheim’s homer tied the game in the third, Miami broke the tie in the fourth. Cole Galvin delivered a two-run single to put the Hurricanes ahead 5-3. Galvin finished with three RBIs.
Miami added two runs in the fifth, one on a single by Alex Sheahan and another on a wild pitch. Alvarez’s second homer in the sixth capped a two-run inning. The Hurricanes added a run in the seventh on a pair of errors by Stanford shortstop Jack Hayes, and a sacrifice fly by Frank Milano in the eighth provided the final margin.
Stanford used seven pitchers. Starter Shaw lasted 1 1/3 innings. Cohen Gomez, Kassius Thomas, Trevor Moore, Arjun Garewal, Ben Reimers and Nick Dugan also pitched. Reimers, Gomez and Dugan each threw a scoreless inning. Moore allowed two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.
The Cardinal managed six hits. Bates and Tyler Sasaki each singled. Stanford’s offense struggled after the third inning, with no runner reaching third base until the ninth, when they loaded the bases with two outs. Pinch hitter Ryan Cheong grounded into a fielder’s choice that forced a runner at home, and the inning ended on a groundout.
Miami collected 12 hits. Luca Sosa had two hits and scored twice. Jack Dubovik walked twice and scored two runs. Evan Peralta walked three times and drove in a run.
Defensively, Miami turned a double play in the fourth inning to end a Stanford threat.
The Hurricanes improved to 37-17 overall. Stanford dropped to 28-26.
The game was the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams. Miami won two of three in a series at Stanford in April, and the Hurricanes have now won three of four overall against the Cardinal.
Alvarez’s performance marked a rebound after he went hitless in three of his previous four games, including an 0-for-4 in Miami’s win at Florida State on May 16. He had a two-hit, three-RBI game against the Seminoles on May 14.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Miami 7, Stanford 6, and its ELO system gave the Hurricanes a 58.40 percent probability to win.
