UNC Greensboro vs. East Tennessee State

GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — The seed East Tennessee State Buccaneers (30-22) open the Southern Conference Baseball Championship on Wednesday afternoon against the seed UNC Greensboro Spartans (22-31) at Fluor Field.

The Buccaneers enter the double-elimination tournament having won the regular-season series against the Spartans two games to one in March. ETSU won 15-8 and 8-2 before UNCG salvaged a 6-3 victory.

East Tennessee State will look to third baseman Luke Matlock to provide offense. Matlock homered and drove in two runs in the Buccaneers’ 11-6 loss to Mercer on May 16, going 2-for-3. Over his past six games, Matlock has multiple hits in three contests and has driven in eight runs. He also homered in a 13-2 loss at Western Carolina on April 26.

UNC Greensboro counters with right-hander Hunter Shuey, who took the loss in his last start May 16 against Western Carolina. Shuey threw six innings, allowing four earned runs on no hits with four strikeouts. The no-hit line is deceptive: he walked six batters in the 7-2 defeat. Despite an inconsistent season — he allowed six earned runs in two innings against Virginia Tech on May 10 — Shuey has shown flashes, allowing one earned run over five innings in a win over VMI on May 3.

The Spartans are coming off a series loss at Western Carolina, taking one of three games. They have lost 10 of their past 14 contests overall. ETSU dropped two of three to Mercer to close the regular season.

The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. The winner will face the seed in the second round.
