Duke vs. Virginia
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Virginia Cavaliers defeated the Duke Blue Devils 6-4 on Wednesday evening at Bank of America Stadium, earning a come-from-behind victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup that saw both teams collect eight hits.
Virginia improved to 36-20 overall, while Duke fell to 26-31.
The game’s decisive sequence unfolded in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the Blue Devils leading 4-1, Virginia’s Gracia led off with a double down the right-field line. After a lineout, Harris walked. Duke starter Aidan Weaver was relieved by Mastroianni, who promptly surrendered a single to Harris that scored Gracia and sent Harris to third. Weatherspoon then singled to right, driving in Harris and cutting the deficit to 4-3. After a popout, Weatherspoon stole second, setting the stage for Jack’s two-run triple to right-center that put Virginia ahead 5-4.
The Cavaliers added a crucial insurance run in the eighth inning when Weatherspoon homered to left field, extending the lead to 6-4. Duke mounted a late threat in the top of the ninth, as Zorn singled and Quagliano reached on a fielder’s choice, with Zorn retired at second. Albright then homered to left-center, scoring Quagliano and pulling the Blue Devils within two runs. But Virginia closer Lucas Hartman entered and retired the next two batters to seal the win.
Duke struck first in the top of the first. Hamilton doubled to left, stole third, and scored on Smith’s groundout to first. The Blue Devils added a run in the fourth when Hamilton doubled, stole third again, and came home on Strand’s triple to right-center. Strand was then thrown out at the plate on a flyout to right field.
Virginia answered in the bottom of the first. Becker was hit by a pitch, Gracia also hit by pitch, and after a strikeout and a caught stealing that moved Becker to third, Harris singled up the middle to plate the Cavaliers’ first run.
Both offenses stalled through the middle innings, with Duke’s pitching keeping Virginia at bay until the sixth-inning breakout. Duke had opportunities but left runners in scoring position, including a double by Anderson in the sixth that resulted in Smith being thrown out at home.
Duke’s RJ Hamilton had two doubles, two stolen bases and a run scored. Tyler Albright homered, singled and drove in two runs. For Virginia, Jake Weatherspoon homered and singled with two RBIs and a stolen base. Jack tripled and drove in two runs.
In the ninth, Duke got the tying run to the plate after Albright’s homer, but Hartman struck out Lambdin swinging to end the game.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Virginia 7, Duke 3, and its ELO system had given Virginia a 60.90 percent probability to win.
