Wichita State vs. Florida Atlantic
CLEARWATER, Fla. (Interstat) — Wichita State and Florida Atlantic will meet on the diamond Wednesday in an American Athletic Conference matchup at Spectrum Field, with the afternoon and evening contests scheduled as the tournament gets underway.
The Shockers (25-27) enter the game looking to snap a stretch of inconsistent play but bring a potent weapon to the mound. Right-hander Johnny Nuanez has been dominant against the Owls this season, tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts in a 4-1 win on May 10. In his most recent outing Saturday against South Florida, Nuanez went seven innings, allowing two earned runs with no hits and six strikeouts in an 8-5 victory. Over his last three starts, Nuanez has surrendered just five earned runs in 17 innings while striking out 17.
The Owls (28-27) counter with a pitching staff that has struggled recently. Florida Atlantic is coming off a 13-2 loss to East Carolina on Saturday, a game in which reliever Dylan Oborne worked only one-third of an inning, yielding no hits or runs. Oborne has seen limited action in recent weeks but could be called upon in a key spot Wednesday.
Florida Atlantic won two of three meetings when the teams met in Wichita from May 8-10, taking the opener 4-2 and Saturday’s game 9-7 before the Shockers bounced back with a 4-1 win Sunday. The series was tightly contested, with Florida Atlantic outscoring Wichita State 14-13 over the three games.
Wichita State dropped two of three at South Florida over the weekend, falling 7-6 in 10 innings Friday and 4-1 on Thursday before salvaging the series finale Saturday. The Shockers have lost seven of their last 10 games overall.
Florida Atlantic, meanwhile, has dropped three straight, all at home against East Carolina, after a 9-3 midweek win at Florida Gulf Coast on May 12.
Third baseman Jayson Jones has been a bright spot for Wichita State, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs in Saturday’s win over South Florida.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 victory for Florida Atlantic. The first pitch for the afternoon contest is set for 1 p.m. EDT, with the evening game to follow.
