Rhode Island vs. George Mason

TYSONS, Va. (Interstat) — Scott Penney drove in eight runs with two home runs and a triple to lead the Rhode Island Rams to a 19-8 victory over the George Mason Patriots on Wednesday afternoon at Capital One Park.

Rhode Island (24-29) collected 20 hits and scored in seven of nine innings. George Mason (27-25) managed 11 hits but could not overcome an early deficit. Penney finished 4 for 7 with two homers, a triple and eight RBIs. Jack Hopko went 5 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Reece Moroney homered and drove in a run, Ryan King added a three-run home run and Aidan Botti also homered for the Rams.

On the mound, starter Sam Houchens allowed two runs, both earned, in four innings with two strikeouts. Parker Aikens threw 2 1/3 innings, surrendering one earned run while striking out three. Connor Johnston contributed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout, and Braden Perry struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to close the game.

The game’s decisive sequence occurred in the sixth inning. Rhode Island led 5-3 after five frames, but the Rams erupted for six runs to break the game open. Hopko singled to start the inning, King was hit by a pitch and Connolly was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Leikus singled to drive in Hopko, making it 6-3. Penney then tripled down the right-field line, clearing the bases and scoring Leikus, King and Connolly to push the lead to 9-3. Thompson followed with an RBI single, and Hopko added another RBI single to complete the six-run outburst that made it 13-3.

Rhode Island had taken the lead in the third inning. After Penney led off with a solo home run, Thompson singled and Moroney singled. Hopko singled to score Thompson, and King then launched a three-run homer to left field to give the Rams a 5-0 lead. Moroney added a solo home run in the fourth.

George Mason scratched out runs in the second, third and fourth innings. The Patriots scored their first run in the second on a groundout by Bagnerise. In the third, an error allowed a run, and in the fourth Blanchard singled home a run to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Patriots mounted a threat in the seventh, scoring five runs to trim the lead to 13-8. Lucas Alberti delivered a two-run single and finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs. But Rhode Island answered in the ninth when Penney crushed his second home run, a two-run shot to left field, to restore a 15-8 advantage. The Rams added four more runs in the inning, including a two-run double by Penney later in the frame, though the play-by-play shows only the home run in the ninth as the final runs.

Penney’s performance continued a strong stretch. In his previous five games, he had gone 7 for 24 with three RBIs, including a 3-for-5 effort against Saint Joseph’s on May 16 and a 2-for-6 showing against Davidson on May 10.

The game featured 31 hits combined and no errors beyond a fielding miscue in the seventh that allowed an unearned run. Rhode Island used five pitchers, while George Mason used six.

The Atlantic 10 matchup was the first meeting of the season between the two schools. The teams had split a three-game series in 2025, with Rhode Island winning two of three at home.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of George Mason 7, Rhode Island 6, and its ELO system gave the Patriots a 50.70 percent probability to win.
