Washington vs. Ohio State
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Big Ten Baseball Championship opens Tuesday with a familiar pairing: seed Washington faces seed Ohio State at 7 p.m. Central at Schwab Field in a single-elimination quarterfinal.
The Huskies (22-31) enter the conference tournament after a 6-1 loss Saturday to UCLA, their third defeat in four games. The Buckeyes (29-23) arrive on a three-game winning streak, capped by an 8-1 victory Saturday at Michigan in which ace Chris Domke threw a complete-game one-hitter.
Domke, a right-hander, has been dominant in three of his last five starts. On May 16 against the Wolverines, he struck out six, walked two and allowed one earned run over nine innings, yielding no hits. He also threw a two-hit shutout with eight innings at Rutgers on April 24 but took a 1-0 loss. In his two starts that were less sharp — a 10-hit, five-earned-run outing versus Michigan State on May 9, and a four-hit, one-earned-run win over Nebraska on May 2 — he still ate innings. He has gone at least seven innings in four of his past five appearances.
Washington will counter with left-hander Jay Miller. Miller has been inconsistent. On May 16 against UCLA, he went four innings, allowing three hits and one earned run with five strikeouts in a 6-1 loss. In his previous outing, a 4-10 loss to Oregon on May 2, he worked only 0.2 innings but did not allow a hit or an earned run, striking out two. The Huskies have dropped four of their last six games, and their offense has struggled: they have scored three runs or fewer in six of their past 10 contests.
The teams met three times in a nonconference series March 13-15 in Seattle, with the home Huskies winning two of three. Ohio State took the opener 10-9 in 10 innings, but Washington won the next two: 5-4 in 11 innings and 5-4 in nine. The two losses for Ohio State came by one run each, and the Buckeyes outscored the Huskies 18-14 over the three games.
In their most recent game, Ohio State got contributions from second baseman Lee Ellis (1-for-4, three RBIs) and third baseman Maddix Simpson (1-for-3, two RBIs). Washington’s bullpen — Cooper McBride (2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 K) and Peysen Sweeney (0.2 IP, 1 H) — provided 3.0 innings of one-run relief in the loss to UCLA.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 Ohio State victory. The winner advances to Wednesday’s semifinal round.
