Georgia State vs. Old Dominion

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Interstat) — Georgia State’s Cole Roberts tossed seven shutout innings of no-hit ball, and the Panthers erupted for 11 runs in the sixth inning Tuesday night to rout Old Dominion 17-1 in a Sun Belt Conference game at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium.

Roberts, a right-hander, struck out five and allowed only one earned run in a performance that overshadowed a 25-minute delay in the top of the second inning while ground crew repaired first base. He retired the first six batters he faced and did not allow a hit over his seven innings, departing after the seventh with his team ahead 16-0. The only run charged to Roberts came on a seventh-inning homer by Old Dominion’s Maverick Stallings.

The victory improved Georgia State’s record to 27-28, while Old Dominion fell to 29-26. The Panthers outhit the Monarchs 17-2, with seven Georgia State batters collecting multiple hits.

Georgia State struck first in the top of the first inning. John Beverley walked, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a double by Bass. Hunter Carlson then doubled home two runs in the second inning, and Adam Haber doubled in another as the Panthers built a 4-0 lead.

Old Dominion managed only two baserunners through the first four innings. Stallings singled in the second, and Thomas Leite was hit by a pitch in the fourth, but both were stranded. Roberts retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced, striking out three through four.

The Panthers broke the game open in the fifth. Haber led off with a double, and Nick Garagozzo followed with a two-run homer to deep right field, his first of the season, extending the lead to 6-0.

Georgia State’s decisive rally came in the sixth inning. Wills Maginnis walked, and Carlson doubled to put runners at second and third. After a walk to Bass loaded the bases, Davis drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. Then Griffith cleared the bases with a ground-rule double to deep center, scoring two more.

Garagozzo singled to drive in another run, and Beverley tripled down the right-field line to plate two more. Maginnis doubled to center to bring home Beverley, and Carlson singled to drive in Maginnis, capping an 11-run inning that gave Georgia State a 17-0 lead.

Carlson finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Haber went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, and Garagozzo was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Beverley had two RBIs on a triple and a walk, and Bailey drove in two runs on two walks and a single.

Old Dominion’s only run came in the seventh when Stallings hit a solo homer to left field. Stallings had two of the Monarchs’ two hits. Ben Tanton took the loss, allowing four hits and two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Roberts, who entered the game with a 2-3 record, had thrown two scoreless innings against Appalachian State on May 16 and six innings of three-run ball at Georgia Southern on May 9. His performance Tuesday night lowered his ERA and gave Georgia State its third win in the last four games.

The game marked the fourth meeting between the teams this season. Georgia State had won the previous series in Atlanta two games to one, including a 10-inning victory April 26. Old Dominion had taken the series opener April 24.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Old Dominion 7, Georgia State 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Old Dominion a 57.70 percent probability to win entering the game.
