SURPRISE, Ariz. (Interstat) — Easton Jones homered twice and drove in five runs to lead BYU to an 18-8 rout of Texas Tech on Tuesday in a Big 12 game at Surprise Stadium.

The Cougars improved to 28-27 overall, while the Red Raiders fell to 27-28.

Jones, a third baseman, finished 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs. His first homer came in the bottom of the fifth inning, a solo shot that tied the game at 8. He then capped a seven-run sixth inning with a two-run blast to right field in the bottom of the seventh that pushed the lead to 18-8.

Ridge Erickson added two home runs of his own, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Ryder Robinson had four hits in five at-bats with three RBIs, and Ezra McNaughton homered and drove in two runs as part of a 3-for-4 day.

Texas Tech took an early lead with a five-run third inning. Tracer Lopez tripled to right-center to score two runs, and Logan Hughes followed with a two-run homer, his 18th of the season. The Red Raiders led 8-1 after the top of the third.

BYU chipped away. In the bottom of the fourth, Erickson led off with a solo homer and McNaughton added a two-run shot to cut the lead to 8-6. Jones tied the game with his solo homer in the fifth.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the sixth. With the score tied 8-8, BYU sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven runs. Robinson singled to drive in a run, Bryker Hurdsman delivered a two-run single and Keoni Painter tripled for two more runs. Erickson then hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot that made it 15-8.

Jones added his second homer in the seventh, a two-run blast, to finish the scoring.

Both teams combined for 30 hits, with BYU collecting 20 and Texas Tech 10. The Cougars hit five home runs in the game.

Lopez was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Texas Tech. Hughes walked three times and homered. Johnny Lowe pitched two scoreless innings in relief for the Red Raiders, striking out two.

Austin Park earned the win for BYU, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

The game was played at Surprise Stadium, a neutral-site venue in suburban Phoenix.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-4 final score in favor of Texas Tech, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Red Raiders a 57.80 percent probability of winning.
