Stetson at Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. (Interstat) — The Central Arkansas Bears host the Stetson Hatters on Tuesday, May 19, in an ASUN Conference matchup at Bear Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under partly cloudy skies with a temperature of 84 degrees.

Central Arkansas (30-25) enters with a winning record and a five-game home stand ahead. Stetson (23-31) looks to rebound after a 12-2 loss at Queens (N.C.) on Saturday, a game in which right-hander Lathan Haywood threw 4⅓ hitless innings with three strikeouts.

Haywood, a key arm for the Hatters, has been sharp despite the team’s struggles. In his previous start May 1 against Florida Gulf Coast, he allowed two earned runs on two hits over two innings. On Tuesday, he is expected to start or handle a significant relief role.

For Central Arkansas, right-hander Silas Cowgill has been a reliable bullpen piece. Over his last seven outings, he has posted a 0.96 ERA, striking out 12 in 11⅔ innings. Most recently, he threw two scoreless innings with two strikeouts Saturday in a 7-4 loss to Lipscomb. Cowgill also earned wins against North Alabama and Austin Peay during that stretch.

Stetson’s offense struggled in Saturday’s loss, with catcher Daniel Perez homering and center fielder Corey Robinson going 2-for-3. The Hatters won two of three at Queens earlier in the weekend, scoring 10 runs over the series.

Central Arkansas dropped two of three to Lipscomb at home, winning 4-1 on Thursday before losing 16-5 on Friday and 7-4 on Saturday. The Bears are 7-3 in their last 10 home games but have lost three of their last four overall.

The Bears have relied on a balanced attack. Second baseman Parker Gwyn homered Saturday, and first baseman Jagger Schattle also went deep. Central Arkansas leads the season series 2-1 against Stetson, winning twice in Deland, Florida, in March.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 victory for Stetson, suggesting a tight contest. Both teams need wins to improve postseason positioning. Stetson’s Haywood and Central Arkansas’ Cowgill could be decisive in the late innings.

Probable starters have not been announced, but both teams will look to keep the game close. With warm, calm weather, conditions favor the pitchers. The ASUN tournament looms, adding importance to every game.

First pitch at Bear Stadium is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
