McNeese State at Southeastern Louisiana
HAMMOND, La. (Interstat) — Southeastern Louisiana hosts McNeese State in a doubleheader Sunday, with the first game set for the afternoon and the nightcap in the evening at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (33-20) enter play with a one-game lead over the Cowboys (28-24) in the Southland Conference standings. Southeastern Louisiana has won two of three meetings this season, including a 13-12, 11-inning thriller Saturday in Lake Charles.
McNeese State is looking to rebound after dropping that series opener. The Cowboys’ offense has been potent all week, scoring 15 runs in Friday’s win and 11 against Nicholls State on Thursday.
Outfielder Isaiah Keller has been the catalyst. The left fielder is 10 for 24 (.417) over his past six games, with four home runs and 13 RBIs. He went 2 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs in Saturday’s loss and had three RBIs in Friday’s victory. For the season, Keller leads McNeese in home runs and RBIs, providing a dangerous presence in the middle of the order.
The Cowboys will need to slow down a Lions lineup that put up 13 runs Saturday. Southeastern Louisiana also defeated Houston Christian 8-4 earlier Saturday in a nonconference makeup game.
Right fielder Peyton Woods is the key bat for the home team. Woods went 4 for 6 with a home run and five RBIs in Saturday’s win over McNeese, continuing a stretch of strong play. He is 8 for 19 (.421) over his past five games, with 10 RBIs. Woods also had a three-hit game May 2 against Lamar and has shown consistent power throughout the conference schedule.
The Lions have been strong at home, where they are 18-7 this season. They are seeking to maintain their position atop the league standings with the conference tournament approaching.
McNeese, meanwhile, is fighting to climb into the top four. The Cowboys have won seven of their past nine games, with the only losses coming to Southeastern Louisiana.
Sunday’s doubleheader will be critical for both teams’ postseason positioning. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the nightcap to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the opener.
