Maryland-Eastern Shore at New Haven

NEW HAVEN (Interstat) — James Reilly pitched five and two-thirds innings of three-hit, scoreless baseball and Vincent Fusco added three and one-third shutout innings of relief as New Haven edged Maryland-Eastern Shore 5-4 in the first game of a Northeast doubleheader Friday.

The Chargers improved to 11-33 while the Hawks fell to 9-38. New Haven outhit Maryland-Eastern Shore 9-7.

Reilly, who earned a win against Delaware State in his previous outing May 8, struck out four and walked two. Fusco struck out five and allowed four hits.

Maryland-Eastern Shore starter Wilfredo Morales struck out three over three innings but allowed three runs on three hits. Carter Champey followed with two hitless innings, and Amari Hackett tossed three scoreless innings, yielding no hits.

New Haven opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Nick Ungania walked, stole second and scored on Bobby Herzman’s single to left. The Chargers added two more in the third. Jake Russo walked, stole second and scored on Herzman’s double to right-center. Casey Cerruto followed with a single to left that plated Herzman, making it 3-0.

The Hawks broke through in the top of the sixth. Julian Jimenez reached on a fielding error by New Haven first baseman Aedan Forde. After a lineout, Henry Clausell doubled down the right-field line to score Jimenez. Jonathan Gonzalez grounded out, then Joshua Caldwell walked and Darrius Brown walked to load the bases, ending Reilly’s outing. Fusco entered and faced Diego Aponte, who doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases with three runs. All four runs in the inning were unearned, giving Maryland-Eastern Shore a 4-3 lead.

The advantage lasted only a half-inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Cam McGugan walked and Jake Russo was hit by a pitch. Hackett relieved Kedrick Alicea. Matt McIntire doubled to center, scoring McGugan and Russo for a 5-4 New Haven lead. McIntire was thrown out attempting to stretch the hit into a triple.

Fusco retired the Hawks in order in the seventh. In the eighth, Joshua Caldwell singled and Aponte singled, but Fusco struck out Marco Davila to end the threat. He set down the side in order in the ninth, striking out Jonathan Rodriguez and getting Julian Jimenez and Ansel Carson on flyouts.

Aponte finished with two hits and three RBIs for the Hawks. Clausell had two hits and a RBI. For New Haven, Herzman had two hits and two RBIs. McIntire drove in two runs on his double. Cerruto added a hit and a RBI.

The turning point came in the sixth inning when the Hawks erased a three-run deficit only to see the Chargers answer immediately. New Haven’s bullpen combination of Fusco and the early relief work of Reilly kept Maryland-Eastern Shore from tying or taking the lead again.
