Southeastern Louisiana vs McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. (Interstat) — Peyton Woods delivered a tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning, and Southeastern Louisiana held on to defeat McNeese State 13-12 on Saturday in a Southland Conference slugfest.

Woods went 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBIs, capping the Lions’ comeback victory after they had squandered a seven-run lead. Brody Capps also went 4-for-6, homering and driving in two runs, and Alex Perry added a solo shot among his two hits. The win improved Southeastern Louisiana’s record to 33-20 overall and 16-13 in conference play, while McNeese State dropped to 28-24 and 12-17.

The game featured 31 combined hits — 16 for the Cowboys and 15 for the Lions — and four lead changes in a back-and-forth affair that lasted more than four hours.

Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a 5-3 lead after the first inning. Connor Robichaux opened the scoring with a solo home run, his 13th of the season, and later a three-run double by Williams and a run-scoring error staked the Lions to an early advantage. McNeese State answered in the bottom half with three runs on RBI hits from Danny Barbero, Pinkerton and a sacrifice fly by Marcus Heusohn.

The Lions extended the lead to 6-3 in the second when Woods doubled home Cuff, then added two runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Capps. Perry’s solo shot in the sixth made it 9-3, and Woods’ two-run single in the seventh pushed the margin to 11-4.

But the Cowboys stormed back. Heusohn’s solo homer in the sixth cut the gap to 9-4, and McNeese State scored three times in the seventh on Barbero’s RBI double and Isaiah Keller’s two-run homer, his 10th of the year. The Cowboys tied the game in the eighth with a four-run outburst, highlighted by Matt Stancliff’s two-run double and a two-run fielder’s choice that included a throwing error.

After neither team scored in the ninth or 10th innings, Woods drilled his sixth homer of the season in the top of the 11th to give the Lions a 13-11 lead. Keller answered with a solo shot in the bottom half, his second of the game and 11th of the season, but McNeese State could not complete the rally.

Southeastern Louisiana starter Triston Todorowski worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on no hits while striking out three, but walked four and was removed after a wild pitch helped set up the Cowboys’ early rally. Luke Lirette earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing one earned run on no hits with four strikeouts. Brady Corcoran tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings for McNeese State.

Keller finished 2-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs for the Cowboys. Heusohn had three hits, including a homer and two RBIs, and Stancliff collected three hits and two RBIs. Barbero added two hits and two RBIs.

The victory avenged a 15-9 loss to McNeese State the previous day, and gave Southeastern Louisiana its third win in the four-game season series between the Southland rivals. The Lions have won five of their last seven games, while the Cowboys have dropped three of four.
