Le Moyne at Central Connecticut

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (Interstat) — Le Moyne built an early eight-run lead and held off a late Central Connecticut charge to claim a 10-8 victory Saturday evening at the CCSU Baseball Field.

The Dolphins (21-24) scored in each of the first five innings, amassing 12 hits and taking advantage of four Blue Devil pitchers. Central Connecticut (17-27) answered with three home runs but could not complete the comeback, dropping its third straight game to Le Moyne after the Dolphins swept a doubleheader Friday.

Le Moyne struck in the first inning. Paulie Goodness singled and stole second, then scored on a single by Jack Cannon. The Dolphins added two more in the second after Landen Duprey doubled and Mike Whelehan was hit by a pitch. Nick Kriegelstein drove in two runs with a ground-rule double in the third as Le Moyne broke the game open. Cooper Romich tripled in the fourth and scored on a sacrifice fly, and Romich added an RBI single in the fifth to push the lead to 10-2.

Central Connecticut answered in the bottom of the fifth. Gabe Tanous walked and Nick Fox flied out before Louis Jordan crushed a two-run homer to center field. Antonio Ducatelli followed with a solo home run down the left-field line, cutting the deficit to 10-5.

The Blue Devils kept pressing. In the seventh, Nick Fox walked, Jordan walked and a groundout moved both into scoring position. Frankie Ferrentino singled to center, driving in two runs to make it 10-7. Le Moyne’s Nathan Hiscox induced a double play to escape further damage.

Central Connecticut mounted one final threat in the ninth. Fox singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a flyout and a walk, Connor Usowski relieved Hiscox. A walk loaded the bases, and Matt Graziose was hit by a pitch to force in a run, trimming the margin to 10-8. But Gabe Pitts grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

Key performances included Bryce DiPiero of Central Connecticut, who pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits. Jack Molini started for Le Moyne and went six innings, allowing five earned runs on zero hits with one strikeout, an unusual line that reflected the damage done via walks and home runs. Louis Jordan went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Blue Devils, and Nick Fox collected three hits. Nick Kriegelstein went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Le Moyne, while Cooper Romich drove in one run and scored twice.

The game marked the third straight win for Le Moyne over Central Connecticut this weekend, following a 16-5 rout and a 3-2 nail-biter Friday. The Dolphins have now won five of their last six contests. Central Connecticut has lost four of its last five.
