Preview: Southeastern Louisiana Hosts Houston Christian in Key Southland Series Finale

HAMMOND, La. (Interstat) — Southeastern Louisiana looks to complete a series sweep Saturday evening when it hosts Houston Christian at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Lions enter the game with a 31-20 record, while the Huskies are 24-28.

Southeastern Louisiana has owned the head-to-head matchup this season, winning all four meetings. The Lions defeated Houston Christian 3-2 on Thursday, following a three-game sweep April 24-26 in which they outscored the Huskies 28-4.

Connor Cuff is a player to watch for the Lions. The shortstop homered and drove in five runs Friday in a 15-9 loss at McNeese State. Over his past 10 games, Cuff is batting .400 with four home runs and 12 RBIs, including a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI in Thursday’s win over the Huskies. He has been particularly dangerous in this series, going 5-for-11 with four RBIs across the four meetings.

Houston Christian will counter with right-hander Joshua Caravalho. The pitcher delivered a strong outing Friday, throwing five scoreless innings with four hits allowed and two strikeouts in a 6-5 win over Nicholls State. However, Caravalho has been inconsistent; he allowed three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings May 9 against Lamar, and gave up six earned runs on April 24 against the Lions. In that start, he struck out five over 5 2/3 innings.

The Huskies are coming off Friday’s victory, their second win in three games. Levi Castilleja homered and drove in three runs in that contest.

Southeastern Louisiana dropped its Friday matchup at McNeese State, but the Lions’ offense has been potent. Luke Barbier struck out five in 2 2/3 innings of relief Friday, and Ben Robichaux homered and drove in two runs.

The Lions have won six of their past eight games overall, while the Huskies are 4-6 in their last 10.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
