Penn vs Columbia

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Alex Sotiropoulos threw seven innings of three-run ball and Cole Fellows drove in two runs as Columbia defeated Penn 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Yale Field.

The Lions, now 15-23-1, used a four-run second inning to erase an early deficit and never trailed again. The Quakers fell to 19-21.

Penn struck first in the top of the first. Gavin Degnan led off with a double to left-center and scored on a double to right-center by Nick Spaventa, giving the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Nick O’Brien singled to center to drive in Jack Warner, who had doubled and advanced on a wild pitch, making it 3-0.

Columbia answered in the bottom half. Jack Kail walked and scored on a single by Owen Estabrook. Cole Fellows walked and scored on a single by Jackson Brewer, cutting the lead to 3-2. The inning ended when Hunter Snyder grounded into a double play.

The Lions seized control in the second. Ben Fishel singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Charlie Slabaugh. After a flyout, Kail singled to move Slabaugh to third, then stole second. Anthony Temesvary singled to right, scoring Slabaugh and sending Kail to third. Fellows followed with a single to center that scored both Kail and Temesvary, giving Columbia a 5-3 lead.

Both teams managed base runners over the next three innings, but Sotiropoulos settled in. He allowed only two hits after the second and struck out seven overall, walking one. Penn’s best chance came in the seventh when Ryan Taylor singled, stole second and scored on a double by Jarrett Pokrovsky, cutting the lead to 5-3. But Sotiropoulos retired the next two batters to end the threat.

Columbia added an insurance run in the sixth. Anthony Temesvary was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on an error by Penn pitcher John Cerwinski. A wild pitch allowed Temesvary to score, making it 6-3.

Penn threatened again in the ninth, putting a runner on base via a walk, but Will Harrigan, who had entered in the eighth, struck out two batters to end the game. Harrigan pitched two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out four.

Josh Katz pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for Penn, striking out two. John Cerwinski faced three batters and recorded two outs without allowing a hit.

For Columbia, Temesvary finished 1 for 4 with an RBI, and Brewer was 2 for 5 with an RBI. For Penn, Pokrovsky was 2 for 5 with an RBI, Degnan went 2 for 4 and Spaventa drove in a run.

The game was the third meeting between the two Ivy League rivals this season. Penn had won two of three in the previous series in April, taking the first two games before losing the finale. Columbia entered Saturday having lost its previous game to Yale, while Penn had lost to Brown the day before.

Interstat’s ELO system had projected Columbia with a 55.30 percent probability to win the game.
