Richmond at Saint Louis
ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders will look to complete a three-game sweep of the Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday afternoon at Billiken Sports Center in an Atlantic 10 Conference baseball matchup.
Richmond (32-22) has dominated the series so far, winning the first two games by scores of 2-0 on Friday and 4-1 on Thursday. The Spiders have outscored Saint Louis 6-1 in the series and have held the Billikens to just one run in 18 innings. Richmond’s pitching staff has been sharp, allowing only four hits in Friday’s shutout.
Saturday’s game is scheduled for an afternoon start under cloudy skies with a temperature of 78 degrees.
The Spiders send Dominic Ruggiero to the mound. Ruggiero, a right-hander, has been effective in recent relief appearances. He threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings against the Billikens on Friday, allowing no hits and striking out two. Over his last seven outings, he has given up seven earned runs in 8 1/3 innings, but nearly all of that damage came in a two-inning stint against Dayton on April 19 when he allowed five runs. Excluding that outing, his ERA is 0.00 over 7 1/3 innings.
Saint Louis (20-33) will counter with Ben Cherico. The Billikens’ right-hander pitched eight strong innings in Friday’s loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out eight. That performance came on the heels of a no-hitter against Fordham on May 8, when he tossed a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts. However, Cherico has been inconsistent; in his two starts before the no-hitter, he allowed a combined 10 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings against VCU and Rhode Island.
The Billikens have lost four of their last five games overall. Richmond has won four of its last five, including the two victories over Saint Louis and a 13-1 rout of George Washington on May 10.
Key players for Richmond in Friday’s win included pitchers Jackson Hinchliffe (four scoreless innings) and Justin Gay (one scoreless inning). For Saint Louis, second baseman Joey Canzoni went 2-for-4.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-4 Richmond victory.
Saturday’s game is the regular-season finale for both teams before they head to the Atlantic 10 tournament. Richmond will aim to build momentum after taking the series, while Saint Louis will try to salvage a win and snap a four-game losing streak at home.
