Columbia at Yale
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Columbia visits Yale on Friday for an Ivy League doubleheader at Yale Field, with first pitch of the afternoon game set for 1 p.m. and the evening game to follow at 6 p.m. The forecast calls for rain and a temperature of 58 degrees, which could complicate play.
The Bulldogs (27-13) have been one of the league’s strongest teams, while the Lions (14-22-1) have struggled overall but found recent success against Yale. Columbia took two of three meetings in the teams’ previous series April 24-26, winning 6-4 on the Friday and 9-8 in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader. The second game that day ended in a 15-15 tie.
Columbia enters on a high note after a 9-1 win at Cornell on May 3, powered by pitcher Thomas Santana, who threw six innings of one-hit ball with seven strikeouts and one earned run. Santana also threw a six-inning, two-earned-run gem against Yale on April 24, but he struggled in an 8-16 loss at Brown on April 29, allowing five earned runs in two innings. He is expected to start one of Friday’s games.
Yale counters with Tate Evans, who has been effective recently. Evans threw six innings of two-run ball with three strikeouts in a 3-2 win over Dartmouth on May 10, and he struck out four in 2⅔ scoreless innings against Dartmouth on May 8. However, in his last start against Columbia on April 26, he allowed six earned runs in six innings of a 9-8 loss.
The Bulldogs’ offense has been potent all season, backed by shortstop Colin Sloan, who drove in two runs in the win over Dartmouth. Yale also got strong relief from Ben Winslow, who threw three scoreless innings in that game.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-5 Yale victory, but the same service’s ELO system gives Columbia a 52.3 percent probability of winning, reflecting the Lions’ recent head-to-head success.
The doubleheader will be critical for both teams as the Ivy League season winds down. Rain could force schedule adjustments.
