Dartmouth at Yale
NEW HAVEN (Interstat) — Davis Hanson homered twice and drove in three runs, and Daniel Cohen tossed a complete-game shutout to lead Yale to a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.
Hanson broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field, then sealed the win with a two-run blast to right field in the sixth that plated Jackson Hays and gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. The Bulldogs improved to 27-13 overall, while the Big Green fell to 14-26.
Cohen, who entered with just one inning of scoreless relief in his previous outing, went the distance, allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out five. He walked none and faced only 32 batters. The right-hander worked efficiently, retiring the side in order in the second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Dartmouth starter Kyle Klaric-Schell took the loss despite not allowing a hit through the first five-plus innings. He exited in the sixth after allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks, with five strikeouts. Nathan Matoush relieved and tossed 2⅓ hitless innings with two strikeouts, but the Big Green offense could not mount a rally.
Yale struck first in the bottom of the first. Kaiden Dossa walked, stole second and scored on a single to left field by Chris DiPrima. The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth when Hanson connected for his first homer.
The Big Green tied the game in the top of the sixth. A. Puig led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a groundout. Sam Andersen then singled to shortstop, driving in Puig to make it 2-1. Andersen stole second but was left stranded.
Hanson answered immediately in the bottom half. After Hays reached on a one-out infield single, Hanson drove a 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his second homer, restoring Yale’s three-run advantage. Klaric-Schell was pulled after the inning.
Dartmouth put two runners on in the ninth. Milo Suarez doubled to right-center with one out, and A. DeMastrie grounded out to second to move Suarez to third. But J. Niswonger flied out to left to end the game.
Owen Turner went 2-for-3 with a triple and a double for Yale. Jack Dauer also had two hits, including a double. For Dartmouth, Suarez finished 2-for-4 with a double. Andersen had the lone RBI.
Yale’s defense was sharp, turning a double play in the second inning when pitcher Cohen picked off Niswonger at third after a caught-stealing attempt. The Bulldogs also cut down Turner at home in the seventh after he tried to score on a bunt.
The game was the opener of a twin bill following Yale’s 7-3 win over Dartmouth on Friday. The Big Green had lost three of their previous four contests, while the Bulldogs had won five of their last six.
Both teams will face each other again later Sunday in the second game of the doubleheader.
