Dartmouth at Yale

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Yale defeated Dartmouth 3-2 in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader at Yale Field, rallying from an early deficit and holding off the Big Green in the late innings.

The Bulldogs struck first in the opening frame. After Kaiden Dossa singled and stole second, Chris Diprima was hit by a pitch and Jack Dauer singled to load the bases. Colin Sloan then delivered a two-run single to left field, scoring Diprima and Dauer to give Yale a 2-0 lead.

Dartmouth tied the game in the top of the third. With one out, A. Moran singled and A. Puig popped out. Nico Bañez grounded out, moving Moran to second, before S. Andersen singled to third. A.J. DeMastrie then doubled down the right-field line, driving in Andersen and Moran to make it 2-2.

Yale answered immediately in the bottom half. Dossa was hit by a pitch, and Garrett Larsen doubled to left field, scoring Dossa to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-2. The inning ended with no further damage, as Chris Diprima reached on a fielder’s choice that erased Larsen at third, and Jack Dauer singled before Colin Sloan flied out.

The score remained 3-2 through the middle innings. Dartmouth threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with one out on a single by Milo Suarez, a sacrifice bunt and a single by T. Rodriguez, followed by a hit batter. But Yale starter Tate Evans induced a foul out and a groundout to escape.

Evans worked six innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Ben Winslow relieved him in the seventh and tossed three scoreless innings, permitting one hit and striking out three to earn the win.

Dartmouth starter Nate Kugler pitched six innings, giving up three earned runs despite not allowing a hit. Kugler walked three batters and hit two, struck out four and was charged with all three Yale runs. Mac Burke entered in the seventh and threw two hitless innings with one strikeout.

Dossa finished with two hits in three at-bats for Yale, while Larsen was 1-for-4 with the go-ahead RBI. Sloan went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

For Dartmouth, Bañez and Andersen each had two hits, with Bañez going 2-for-5 and Andersen 2-for-5. DeMastrie drove in both Dartmouth runs on his one hit.

The Big Green made a final push in the ninth. With one out, Rodriguez walked, and A. Moran sacrificed him to second. H. Murray pinch-hit and walked, and Mason Smith pinch-ran. But Bañez grounded into a fielder’s choice that forced Smith at second, leaving Rodriguez on third, and Andersen grounded out to third to end the game.

Yale improved to 27-13 overall, while Dartmouth fell to 14-26. The teams played the second game of the doubleheader later Sunday. Yale had won the series opener 7-3 on Friday.

Interstat’s ELO system projected Yale with a 71.10 percent probability to win the game.
