Rider at Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Clayton Poliey pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run and striking out two while carrying a no-hitter into the ninth inning, as the Rider Broncs defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 5-2 in the first game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
Poliey faced only one batter over the minimum through eight innings, retiring the side in order in five of the first six frames. The Bobcats managed just one baserunner on a walk in the sixth, but that runner was erased on a double play. Quinnipiac grounded into two double plays overall.
Poliey’s bid for a no-hitter ended with one out in the ninth, when Ian Nilsen singled to right field. Nilsen was replaced by pinch runner Luke Zeisloft, who advanced to second on an error by the shortstop and scored on a single by Ian Smith. Smith’s hit drove in the second Bobcats run of the inning and made it 5-2, but Poliey struck out Alex Irizarry to end the game.
Rider took control early, scoring three runs in the second inning. With one out, Anthony Paskell singled and Nick Shuhet singled to put runners on first and second. Eliot Medlock doubled down the left-field line, scoring Paskell, and Peter Crespo grounded out to second base to drive in Shuhet, giving the Broncs a 3-0 lead.
The Broncs added a run in the third when Will Gallagher singled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a single by Kyle Neri. Rider’s final two runs came in the ninth. After Esteban Hartmann singled and Neri doubled, Charley Magoulick doubled to left-center, driving in both runners to push the lead to 5-1.
Magoulick finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Neri was 2 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Crespo went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Medlock was 1 for 4 with an RBI. The Broncs collected 13 hits on the night.
Quinnipiac’s first run came in the fifth inning. Irizarry tripled down the right-field line and scored on a groundout by Jack Balcer, who finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Irizarry also had a single in the ninth to finish 1 for 4. The Bobcats totaled four hits.
James Pazdera pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief for Quinnipiac, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out two. Matt Alduino threw three innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Starter Jacob Belecky lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.
Rider improved to 26-17 overall. Quinnipiac fell to 23-25. The Broncs had beaten the Bobcats 9-3 in the series opener Thursday. Rider’s next games are at home against Saint Peter’s starting May 14. Quinnipiac travels to Merrimack for a three-game series beginning the same day.
Interstatl’s ELO system projected Rider with a 57.30 percent probability to win the game.
