Morehead State at Ohio
ATHENS, Ohio (Interstat) — Morehead State scored all five of its runs in the first two innings Wednesday evening and held off Ohio for a 5-1 victory at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Eagles improved to 25-22 on the season, while the Bobcats fell to 9-39. Morehead State had defeated Ohio 10-2 on April 7 in Morehead, Kentucky.
Morehead State jumped on Ohio starter Luke Bryant immediately. In the top of the first, left fielder Roman Germann singled to right-center field. After a groundout moved Germann to second and an error by shortstop Cam Bryant sent him to third, designated hitter Cam Kearns walked. Catcher Nolan McCubbin then launched a three-run homer to right-center field, scoring Kearns and Germann, with the latter run unearned. The Eagles added two more in the second. Second baseman Cade Griffith singled to right field, and Germann followed with a two-run home run to right-center, his second hit of the night.
Ohio turned to reliever Landon Price after Germann’s homer. Price worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out one. He was followed by Aiden Cook, AJ Dallmayer, Grant Wilson and Dillon Masters, who combined to keep Morehead State off the scoreboard over the final 6 2/3 innings. Cook, Dallmayer, Wilson and Masters each tossed one inning, with Cook giving up one hit and Dallmayer recording one strikeout.
The Bobcats’ only run came in the bottom of the seventh. Facing Morehead State reliever Cole Wells, right fielder Dylan Shepherd singled to right field. Catcher Tyler Stack singled to center, advancing Shepherd to third. Stack then stole second. Shortstop Cam Bryant grounded out to first base, allowing Shepherd to score and moving Stack to third. Wells, who pitched one inning, allowed one earned run and struck out one.
Ohio had four hits in the game, with Stack going 1-for-2 and adding a walk and a stolen base. Pinch hitter Max Palinski doubled in the eighth inning for the Bobcats’ only extra-base hit. Shepherd and center fielder Cam Boyd each singled. Cam Bryant drove in the run with his groundout.
Morehead State’s offense, which had produced five runs on seven hits through the first two frames, was limited to one hit the rest of the way. McCubbin added a single in the sixth but was caught in a pickoff. Germann finished with two hits, including the home run, and two RBIs. Griffith also had two hits. Left fielder JJ Dutton went 0-for-4 with a strikeout for the Eagles.
Morehead State’s pitching staff allowed just the one run on four hits. The Eagles used three pitchers, with starter Smith working into the seventh before giving way to Wells and then DavisE, who closed the game. DavisE pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
The game began at 6 p.m. and lasted 2 hours, 47 minutes.
Morehead State next hosts Western Illinois for a three-game series beginning Friday. Ohio returns home to face Toledo in a three-game set starting Friday. The Eagles then travel to Tennessee Tech for a three-game series May 14-16, while Ohio visits Michigan on May 12 before a three-game series at Eastern Michigan from May 14-16.
