South Carolina Upstate at Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. (Interstat) — South Carolina Upstate looks to even a Big South series Saturday evening when the Spartans visit Presbyterian at the Presbyterian Baseball Complex.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under clouds with temperatures near 71 degrees.
USC Upstate (23-27, 12-14 Big South) aims to rebound after dropping Friday’s opener 6-5 to the Blue Hose, a game that saw the Spartans’ Chris Torres deliver a dominant but losing effort. The right-hander tossed seven innings of no-hit ball, allowing only one earned run while striking out six. Torres anchors a USC Upstate staff that has been sharp over the past week; the Spartans have scored at least 12 runs in three of their past four wins, including an 18-4 rout of Elon on Tuesday.
Torres (3-6, 4.60 ERA) has been inconsistent but effective recently. In his previous four starts, he has twice allowed one earned run over six or more innings but also surrendered five earned runs in two separate outings — a 3 1/3-inning stint at Samford on April 24 and a five-inning, eight-hit effort against Gardner-Webb on May 1.
Presbyterian (11-38, 6-17) snapped a six-game losing streak with Friday’s victory and has shown occasional resilience, winning three of its last six games. The Blue Hose have struggled against top competition, dropping series to Citadel and Radford earlier this month, and are coming off an 8-1 loss at Tennessee on Tuesday.
Right-hander Tyrell Williams (4-6, 4.66) will take the mound for Presbyterian looking to build on his Friday performance. Williams matched Torres, working seven innings while allowing three hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. The junior has been Presbyterian’s most reliable starter, winning three of his past four decisions. He threw seven scoreless innings at Longwood on April 17 and has not allowed more than two earned runs in three of his last four outings.
Jonathan Williams provided the Blue Hose’s offensive spark Friday with a home run and an RBI single, while Emory Guilford drove in the game-winning run.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-1 USC Upstate victory, and the ELO system gives the Spartans a 75.9 percent probability to win. The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday.
USC Upstate’s Maloy Heaghney went 2 for 4 with an RBI on Friday and has been productive in the middle infield. Presbyterian will need to generate more offense than it has in recent losses to support Williams’ quality outings.
The Spartans’ next 10 games include a home date with Clemson on Tuesday before hosting Northern Kentucky for a weekend series. Presbyterian visits Gardner-Webb next weekend after a Tuesday matchup with Western Carolina.
