Alcorn State at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — Jackson State defeated Alcorn State 6-2 Monday evening at Braddy Field, sweeping the three-game Southwestern Athletic series with its third straight victory over the Braves.

The Tigers improved to 19-22 overall; Alcorn State fell to 4-38.

Jackson State starter Derek Arrocha delivered six strong innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs while striking out six. Arrocha, who had struggled in his previous outing April 26 against Alabama A&M with five earned runs in six innings, retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and kept the Braves off the scoreboard until the seventh.

Alcorn State starter Kanious Davis matched Arrocha through six innings, giving up no hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts, but was hampered by defensive miscues. The Braves committed three errors, leading to three unearned runs.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the first, when Jackson State’s Tyree Reed walked, advanced to third on a balk and scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers added a run in the second on Hederick Torres’ double that drove in Diego Melendez, and made it 3-0 in the fourth on Reed’s RBI single after an error allowed Torres to reach base.

Alcorn State broke through in the top of the seventh. After Kanious Davis was hit by a pitch, Keatan Hawk homered to right field, driving in two runs and cutting the deficit to 3-2. Hawk finished 1 for 3 with a home run and two RBI.

The pivotal moment came in the bottom of the seventh, when Jackson State answered with three runs to seize control. Reed led off with a bunt single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, then scored on a passed ball after walks to Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. and Diego Melendez. Torres walked to load the bases, and Shemar Harris singled to third base, with a throwing error by the third baseman allowing three runs to score, two unearned, giving the Tigers a 6-2 lead.

Jacob Wingard came on in relief for Alcorn State and retired the side, but the Braves could not mount a comeback. Jaedeyn Edwards pitched two scoreless innings for Jackson State, allowing two hits and striking out none.

Key contributors included Chance Jackson, who went 3 for 4 for Alcorn State, and Chase Moore, who had two hits. For Jackson State, Tyree Reed was 2 for 2 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI. Torres drove in a run and scored twice. Melendez had a double and two runs.

The series had been lopsided entering Monday: Jackson State won 14-1 on Sunday and 9-1 on Saturday. The Tigers also took the previous head-to-head meeting Feb. 27, 13-8, while Alcorn State won 8-7 in 10 innings on Feb. 15.

Alcorn State next hosts Prairie View for a three-game series beginning Friday. Jackson State travels to Southern on Tuesday before a weekend series at Mississippi Valley State.
