Morehead State at Arkansas-Little Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Interstat) — Callum McGill threw seven no-hit innings and Caden Sheridan delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth to lift Morehead State to a 1-0 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday night at Mims Gym in an Ohio Valley Conference clash.
The Eagles improved to 24-20 overall and 15-11 in conference play, while the Trojans fell to 26-20 and 17-9.
McGill (W, 4-3) matched zeros with Arkansas-Little Rock starter Brannon Westmoreland over the first seven frames. McGill did not allow a hit, walked two and struck out four, facing the minimum through three innings. Westmoreland scattered three hits over seven scoreless innings, striking out 10 and walking one, but the Trojans could not push across a run.
The Trojans’ best scoring chance came in the bottom of the fifth against McGill. Nolan Freund doubled to right-center for the game’s first hit, then advanced to third on a single by Trey Baumbach. But McGill struck out Landon Martin and got Jackson Chaplain to ground into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.
Arkansas-Little Rock again threatened in the seventh. Blake Simpson led off with a double to left-center and was replaced by pinch runner Michael O’Brien. After a walk to Freund, a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, but McGill struck out Baumbach and coaxed a fielder’s choice groundout from Chaplain to escape.
Morehead State’s breakthrough came in the top of the ninth against reliever Gage Haley. With one out, William Olson walked and advanced to third when Haley’s pickoff attempt sailed into center field for an error. Ian McCubbin was intentionally walked, and Tag Andrews replaced Haley. Sheridan then lined a single to shallow right, scoring Olson and sending McCubbin to third.
Devin Costa (SV, 3) closed the door for Morehead State, pitching two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit – a seventh-inning single by O’Brien – and struck out three.
Andrews gave up the lone hit and one run in two-thirds of an inning for Arkansas-Little Rock. Haley (L, 2-3) allowed one run on no hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings, striking out one.
McCubbin went 2-for-3 with a single and a walk for Morehead State. Griffith added a hit and Olson drew two walks. Simpson had a double for the Trojans, and Freund was 1-for-3 with a walk.
The two teams continue their three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. Central, with the series finale Sunday. Morehead State travels to Western Illinois next weekend, while Arkansas-Little Rock hosts Arkansas State on Tuesday before a road trip to Tennessee-Martin.
Interstat’s ELO system had projected Arkansas-Little Rock with a 60.10 percent probability to win.
