East Carolina pounds South Florida 12‑2 in doubleheader opener

GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — Joseph Webb pitched five hitless innings with six strikeouts and Jack Herring drove in five runs as East Carolina routed South Florida 12-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Clark–LeClair Stadium.

The Pirates racked up 15 hits, including home runs by Austin Irby and Herring. Both went deep during a six-run second inning that wiped out South Florida’s early 2-0 lead. Herring finished 4 for 6 with a homer and five RBIs, Braden Burress went 3 for 3 and scored four times, and Davin Whitaker, Matthew Lashley and Ethan Rose each drove in a run.

South Florida managed only three hits. A triple by Noe Mirza and a sacrifice fly by Mike Carriles produced the Bulls’ two runs in the top of the second. Nolan Bernard and Edwin Alicea each pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief.

The victory improved East Carolina to 28-16 overall; South Florida fell to 28-15. The teams resumed their American Athletic series later Saturday.
