Lafayette at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — Josiah Overbeek hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Army a 9-8 victory over Lafayette in a Patriot League game Monday afternoon that stretched into the evening at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.

The Black Knights rallied from a eight-run deficit and then from a three-run hole in the ninth inning to earn their sixth consecutive win over the Leopards in a series that concluded a three-game weekend set. Army improved to 25-17 overall, while Lafayette fell to 9-32.

Lafayette struck first and often against Army starter Anthony Ramirez, scoring five runs in the second inning and three more in the third to build an 8-0 lead. Bode Grieve singled and scored in the second, then added a three-run homer in the ninth that briefly gave the Leopards the lead again. Grieve finished 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Jack Mislan tripled and scored in the second and later singled in the ninth.

Army starter Anthony Ramirez lasted only 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks. Michael Delph entered and quieted the Leopards, pitching 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out eight.

Lafayette starter Ben Waterman pitched seven innings, giving up no hits but five earned runs on four walks and two hit batters, striking out seven. The unusual stat line stemmed from Army’s five-run seventh inning, which began with a walk, a stolen base and a single by Mason Scott. After two more walks and a hit batter, Zac Farrell launched a grand slam to left field, cutting the Army deficit to 8-5.

Waterman left after the seventh, and Kellen Moore retired the side in order in the eighth. In the top of the ninth, with Army reliever Delph still on the mound, Grieve launched a three-run homer to left center, scoring Brandon Doubek and Jack Mislan to extend Lafayette’s lead to 8-5.

Army responded in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Chris Barr walked and scored on a double by Will Parker. Carter Hewitt walked, and after a pitching change to James Reese, Thomas Schreck walked to load the bases. Mason Scott singled up the middle, driving in two runs to tie the game at 8-8. Reese struck out Zac Farrell to end the inning, but the damage was done.

In the 10th, Lafayette’s Ryan Stoddard flied out to center, and Will Dobil reached on a hit by pitch. Matt Colella singled, but Brandon Doubek lined out to left and Bode Fernsler struck out looking.

Army’s Paul Andrzejewski flied out to right to start the bottom of the 10th, and Zac Farrell struck out looking. Alex Payne replaced Reese on the mound for Lafayette and faced Overbeek, who crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the right-field wall for the walk-off win.

Overbeek also pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out one. He earned the win. For Army, Mason Scott had two hits and three RBIs, and Farrell drove in four runs with his home run. For Lafayette, Kyle McKernan had two hits and an RBI, and Ryan Stoddard drove in two runs.

The loss was Lafayette’s third straight in the series, which Army swept with a doubleheader Sunday. The Black Knights won 6-3 and 10-9 in 10 innings earlier in the weekend. Army hosts Long Island on Tuesday, while Lafayette hosts Saint Peter’s on Wednesday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a 7-2 Army victory, and its ELO system gave the Black Knights a 77.40% probability of winning.
