Texas Christian at Baylor

WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Zack James delivered a dominant performance on the mound and Preston Gamster provided the big blow at the plate as Texas Christian routed Baylor 10-2 in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader at Baylor Ballpark.

The Horned Frogs, rebounding from an 11-4 loss to open the series on Friday, improved to 24-15 overall. Baylor fell to 22-17.

The most important part of the game was James’s masterful outing. The right-hander stifled the Bears’ lineup over seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out eight and walking one. He faced minimal trouble, with Baylor’s only run against him coming in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly after a pair of singles and a stolen base aided by a TCU error.

James’s effort set the tone and provided stability for a TCU team looking to even the series. It continued a strong run for the pitcher, who tossed seven scoreless innings in a hard-luck loss to Arizona just eight days prior.

TCU’s offense staked James to an early lead and never looked back, racking up 16 hits. The Horned Frogs struck first in the opening inning when Chase Brunson’s single to right center drove in Jack Arthur. They added another run in the second as Rob Liddington doubled and scored on Gamster’s RBI double.

The game was broken open in the sixth inning. After Jack Bell’s RBI single made it 3-1, Gamster stepped up with a man on and launched a two-run homer to left field, his third of the season, to extend the TCU lead to 6-1. Gamster finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Baylor starter Ethan Calder took the loss, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. Reliever Luke McLeod was charged with four runs in just one-third of an inning, including the Gamster home run. Baylor relievers Grayson Murry and Brayden Bergman combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings to keep the Bears within striking distance until the ninth.

TCU put the game out of reach with a four-run ninth inning, capitalizing on Baylor errors. Liddington drove in a run with a single, and Cole Cramer cleared the bases with a two-run single up the middle. Another run scored on a Baylor fielding error. Liddington was 3 for 5 with an RBI, and Cramer went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Baylor managed 10 hits but struggled to string them together against James and reliever Nate Stern, who worked the final two innings. The Bears scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Pearson Riebock.

The teams were set to conclude their series with the second game of the doubleheader later Sunday. TCU will host Dallas Baptist on Tuesday before a weekend series against Houston. Baylor travels to face Sam Houston on Tuesday before a road series at Arizona State.
