Texas Christian at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Chase Brunson delivered a career-high five RBIs, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning, to lift Texas Christian to a 5-4 victory over Baylor in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Baylor Ballpark.
The Horned Frogs, who dropped the series opener 11-4 on Friday, improved to 24-15 overall. Baylor fell to 22-17.
For seven innings, Baylor starter Zack Wallace was in command, holding a potent TCU lineup to just four hits and no earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. He exited with a 4-2 lead, a margin built largely on a two-run homer by Brady Janusek in the fifth inning. Janusek’s ninth of the season scored Pearson Riebock, who had singled, and erased the early deficit.
TCU had struck first in a chaotic opening frame. Sawyer Strosnider singled and Brunson followed with an RBI single. The Horned Frogs then loaded the bases with one out, but Baylor escaped further damage with a fielder’s choice. The Bears immediately responded in the bottom half against TCU starter Lance Davis. Travis Sanders led off with a double and, after a walk and a bunt single loaded the bases, two runs scored on a passed ball and a groundout to cut the lead to 2-1.
Davis settled in remarkably after the rocky first, not allowing another hit after Sanders’ leadoff double. He finished with a final line of seven innings pitched, allowing three runs, none earned, on just that one hit, with five strikeouts. He kept the Horned Frogs within striking distance until their offense broke through.
The decisive rally came in the eighth against Baylor reliever Caleb Bunch. Cole Cramer led off with a single and Strosnider walked, setting the stage for Brunson. The center fielder launched a three-run shot to left field, his eighth of the year, to put TCU ahead 5-4.
Brunson wasn’t finished, adding a two-run double in the ninth to provide critical insurance. He finished 3 for 4 with the homer, double, walk, and five driven in.
The Horned Frogs’ bullpen sealed the win. Walter Quinn worked a perfect eighth inning, striking out two. After Brunson’s ninth-inning double extended the lead, Tanner Sagouspe retired the Bears in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save, securing the victory for Davis.
Charlie Atkinson provided 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Baylor, and RJ Ruais entered with the bases loaded in the ninth and struck out two to prevent further scoring.
The Bears managed just six hits in the game, with Janusek’s two-run homer representing their biggest blow. Sanders finished 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
The teams were set to conclude the series with the second game of the doubleheader later Sunday.
