BYU Edges Houston in Pitchers’ Duel Between Cougars

HOUSTON (Interstat) — Garrison Sumner and Wayland Crane combined for 8 1/3 hitless innings of relief as the BYU Cougars held off the Houston Cougars 3-2 on Thursday night at M.O. Campbell Center.

BYU built a 3-0 lead in the first four innings, with RBI from Jones and Ezra McNaughton. Houston’s only offense came on solo home runs by Xavier Perez in the third inning and Cade Climie in the eighth. Sumner, BYU’s top star, struck out seven over 4 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run to rebound from a rough outing a week prior. Houston pitchers limited damage despite BYU’s 11 hits. Both teams are now 16-16 this season.
